Nice camera, nice price

Post by Horus »

Here is one to make all you photographers a bit sick, especially Grandad who I know is a Nikon Nikon fan-boy, they have just released this camera with 36.3 million pixels. You can pre-order it for £2399.00 body only ……………………….. Argggggggggggggggggg ………. I want one!

http://www.nikon.com/news/2012/0207_dslr_01.htm

Have a look at this link for a sample picture, it may take a while to actually load the link due to the resolution, but once it has loaded just move the magnifying glass anywhere in the picture and left click, amazing detail, you can read the book titles and see creases in the material covering the table tops. Best opened up in a new window.

or have a look at these:

WOW! But unfortunately a body of that price deserves lenses of a quality to match it and they would start at around £1000 a time and upwards. My only consolation is "What's the big deal, my lenses would fit that camera"

Those files are SO large H that they take ages to download, my old AMD Sempron is too slow for those large files. My download is OK though at around 8mbs.

I was a Fuji fan for years but when I decided to return to SLR(D) it had to be a Nikon because that and Leica have always been names that I associate with top end photography. In my old roll film days, apart from my trusty Minolta 7000, I had a medium format Yashica 635. A lovely camera but one weekend a friend at work let me borrow his Hasselblad....that is something else. :up

As far as I know, LLL, Bigken and myself use Nikons. Kiya has a Canon and I believe you use Fujis but apart from those I don't know what our other friends are using. Perhaps a 'sticky' My Camera, would be an idea and we could say what we are using and post some of our favourite shots with that camera :?:

What are you playing at Kiya? missing those Lotto numbers, you are as bad as Mrs H :( Never mind though, when you do hit the big time the rest of use will not feel embarassed about you buying us all one.

Grandad, I did warn you about the massive file size to download, but they are certainly worth a look at. Just imagine the file size out of camera for a RAW file :o

Ruby Slippers, it may be because the files are really big and your connection is dropping out before it loads properly, they really are very big images with very high definition so I would not worry too much.

It's all your fault, Horus! ;) I've just been on to the Nikon site and it said that the imaging pages have been overloaded with traffic - or words to that effect! You should have kept it to yourself and not told all those Egypt4uers!

Now you've done it Kiya, first rule of 'Big Wins', don't tell a soul.....now you can expect to be inundated with begging letters

I didn't open all of those pictures Horus but as navigation was very slow I downloaded two on to my computer. One was 26mb...now that is one big picture file :o The definition is amazing and you need to grossly enlarge before pixels become visible.

Yea, that's why I gave you all the warning, the files are huge, but as you say Grandad the resolution is amazing.

I didn't much difficulty at all opening the photos H and they are FABULOUS! That would be a camera to die for........will have to start rubbing Kiya's posts to get some 'luck' from her! :)

I don't have much of a basis of comparison re: cameras. In the good old days of film I had a Minolta SLR and then various cheap smaller flash cameras including a Canon. Once I graduated to DSLR I researched quite a few and finally decided on getting a Nikon. I don't have any real reason 'why' I opted for Nikon meaning there was not one specific selling feature that I liked better than another. I DO know that when I took the photography course last year about 80% of the class had some sort of Nikon and basically the fellow teaching the class had a Nikon as well. They do seem to be popular cameras.

A couple of years ago Kiya and I were looking to change up to DSLR at about the same time. Kiya opted for the Canon and me the Nikon. There was very little between them in the reviews but I chose the Nikon D5000 because it has a hinged screen which really is useful when you are holding the camera very low or above your head. I mostly use the TTL viewfinder except in those situations where it is impossible to get my eye to the TTL.

Back to the D800, could you imagine how much memory it would use per shot when shooting RAW, plus the time to upload ur snaps on to a computer :(

@ Grandad - on your D5000 do you use the tilt screen often? And are you using the screen primarily to take your photos or are you using the eye finder?

I'm still intent on looking 'through' the camera. I see lots of people holding up their cameras out at arms length lining up their shot but i can't do that. Got to have 'me eye' on the lens! :) Am not sure if one way is preferable over the other or if it is just personal choice.

LLL, tilt screens are great for when you are taking awkward pictures like over the heads of people or to save you bending down or crooking your neck trying to look through the viewfinder. Overall I reckon the viewfinder gives a better feel for what you are doing, but the LCD is great for composing a view.

Precisely as Horus says LLL, I take some pictures with the camera sitting on the floor when the screen is invaluable. In most situations I use the eyelevel viewfinder. Apart from the better image, I find it easier and faster to compose the picture that way.

Another advantage of the hinged screen is that with the strap around your neck and the camera hanging down, you can get some discreet candid shots without your subject noticing. To raise the camera to your eye would be too obvious.
