Urban Wildlife

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

As I was out this afternoon in the garden I was 'attacked'!!!! AGHHHHHHHHH - out of the blue and out of the sky down onto me came one of our indigenous wildlife members - a tree frog. Not too sure what caused this little guy to fall outta the tree and onto me - but - after I screamed, jumped and knocked him off my shoulder he basically jumped onto the ledge of the garden wall and then sat there. Not too sure he was overly comfortable - but he waited long enough for me to run and get the camera and get him in focus.

He, or she, was quite neat. We have lots of tree frogs here and they do periodically fall out of the sky but this is the first time I've actually been 'dropped on'.................any of you other E4Uers have similar creepy crawlies in the backyard? Any photos you can share?

For several years we had a toad (I think it's a toad) that was happy to live in one of the plant pots under, I believe, a fern. Haven't seen him for a couple of years but this is a portrait of a few years ago.

Some unwelcome visitors are rats on the embankment but I am quite successful in culling them with a bait trap. They usually go away to die but this one didn't get far.

My guess is that your Toad is actually a Frog, very nice picture by the way :up
It is hard to tell from just one shot, but Frogs have a smoother wet skin than Toads which are dry and warty, Frogs also have a higher back with two ridges which yours seems to have, they also have less of a head than a Toad as it tends to blend into the shoulder area more (if that makes sense). If compared side by side a frog has longer back legs than a Toad which only hops about, they do not make long jumps like a frog does.
