Fox cub 2018

Post by Grandad »

I scattered a tin of chunky dog food on the bank last evening. I only occasionally switch on the trail cam but last evening I did. So happy I did that because I have the first sighting of this years cub. We had 5 last year but at least this little chap or chapess ;) will get all of his parents attention.

It is probably about 8 weeks old and I hope we will see much more of him/her. :up

Your little fox is definitely a good looking little guy. Birds were pretty cheeky coming up so close but am guessing they know he is a young 'un and not apt to do them any damage.

Good video. Your cam is positioned really well - you got good shots of them.

We don't have any pets, or chickens, or rabbits, all we have is some garden visitors and I thought you might like to see an up date on this years fox cubs. Yes I DID say CUBS as there now seems to be two. Please view full screen to see the best detail of these cheeky animals

I am sure you guys must get bored to death with my posts about the foxes; but forgive me because we have been fox watching for about 40 years and like to study their ways and personalities.
A couple of weeks ago we assumed that there was just one cub, then two nights ago a second one appeared. Well last night to my surprise a third cub appeared at around 9pm when the only video is by IR light.
Our aim now is to keep putting out food and hopefully they will come to see us in daylight. They are SO cute. ;)

Don't stop posting about the foxes Grandad. I love 'em! You're really in a unique position to see all of this and I really appreciate you sharing it as otherwise "I" would never ever see anything related to foxes and especially first hand like this.

Coming to your lovely videos rather late sorry. I really miss our foxes, we don't get any in the garden here (Vienne) as we are not quite as rural. We found that our fox cubs normally arrived singly, the most adventurous first following Mum and then the next day 2 or 3 and so on. How many did you have in the end?

@FABlux
Hi FABlux, good to see you. Yes we are still fox watching and get quite a kick when they start to have confidence and build trust.
We had 5 cubs last year and this year there are 3. I can sit on the bench in the evening just a couple of meters from where I put food and they all come down. The cubs are growing fast, probably 4 months now and there is a lot of playful scrapping that goes on. Dad is looking rather thin and I am concerned about him.
I don't think I have already posted this video. It was on 21st of last month and they were still suckling. That all stopped a couple of days later

Thank you Grandad :)

That is lovely, she certainly is a wonderful mother and the cubs are developing well. I'm glad you are being rewarded for your care of them by their trust in you, we never saw Mum feeding the cubs in our garden. Maybe it was the presence of all the hedgehogs and our cat in our garden when the family was down.

Kinkie (Dad) used to lose weight most summers, I think it was all the caring for the family. If yours gets very thin would you be able to get any worm treatment into him? Is there anything he particularly enjoys that the rest of the family don't? We treated Mum by putting it into marmite which only she liked.

At precisely 03.56 this morning I heard 12 gunshots nearby in fairly rapid succession. As there were no other sounds, like screams, I assumed that nobody had been shot, and resumed my slumbers.
When I go to the village shop, by scooter of course, ;) I go around a large recreation field which is secured with a locked gate. At the top of the field were 6 caravans which I assumed to be travellers who must have picked the gate lock.
This set my mind wandering, could the shots have been the travellers slaughtering our fox family?
Last evening I recorded all 5 of the family on the field cam. I switched it on again this evening and feeling anxious I brought the card in at 9pm.
Pleased to say that my anxiety was unfounded. While we had been watching a super wildlife program on BBC2, they had all come down for their supper and relished their nightly treat of peanuts.
I shall sleep sound tonight but hopefully no more gunshots. :zz

Twelve gunshots is quite a lot of shots!! Here you hear the occasional discharge but never 12. I think I would have been up and looking out and about to see what was happening and like you I would have thought about the foxes getting shot as well.

Good to know that everybody is A-ok.......... (WHEW!)

It disturbed me LLL. I am sure it sounded like a gunshot, probably just .22 because the report was not too loud. It would not be bird scarers because there are no fields nearby. I suppose it could have been a firework????
Student revellers returning from a night out?
No news reports so nobody died
