I agree with you both, many of the so called celebs nowadays are really rubbish as are many of the new comedians
I agree that the 'Civilisations' program is really good, it is surprising just how many good programs are available if you scan the BBC I-player option. There was one on BBC 4 that was about the indian tribes living in and around Vancouver Island where LLL lives, brilliant scenery and very interesting.
@H - BBC4 has a show on the First Nations on the Island? Would be interesting to see that. Don't think it is being shown here.
@Kiya - Do you have a passive clay heater? I have one here and interestingly enough they do give off heat - sufficient to get by particularly if you are in a small room. I have fairly large clay pots and a super doper metal bolt that I hang down. I also have a metal candle holder thing that I can put 4 tea lights in and then another metal tray that the entire thing sits in. I've actually used these and while they're not going to heat you up to warm they will take the chill off. I keep two bags of 100 each tea candles that last about 3 - 4 hours each
This is the set up I have although I have much more stable sides than tiles.
I saw this one when I looked right now to see the model of what I was talking about. Don't know if this really works or not but ??? I might try upgrading mine to this. Anything to take the chill off in a small room IF the gas & electric go out.

Kiya, I used to work for a company down here and one of there products were hot water bottles. We used to make about 5 million a year for Boots, M & S, Superdrug etc...
I have two that I take with me in the caravan, as I don't like to leave any heating on overnight and it can get a bit nippy during the night outside of the Summer months, so I tuck a couple at the bottom of the bed to keep my tootsies warm, guess where Annie finishes up?

You should have seen me last night with jammies, bed socks, fingerless gloves & a thick housecoat , not a pretty sight but needed, the cold air in each room hit me as I opened doors
Do you happen to have cloth bags you can fill with rice and then microwave for a couple minutes. They make really good dry hot water bottle heaters (so to speak) and can definitely take the chill off. They do stay warm for a fairly long time too.
I have a couple that I keep in the freezer for cold therapy but could also microwave them to act as a heating pad too.
LLL, as a hot water bottle can be hazardous either by scalding when filling, or by skin contact burns; twenty or so years ago alternatives were sought. The most promising was a gel filled rubber or plastic container that was heated in a micro wave. They soon fell out of favour with leakage of the gel.
The current favoured type is a fabric bag filled with a grain, wheat for instance, and heated in microwave. These are commercially available but one can make their own as you describe. They are about the safest portable heat pad but I still think a rubber hottie with a fabric cover is the best.......but I would do wouldn't I as we were the only rubber hottie manufacturers in Europe.

Pretty much what I wear when it's seriously cold, except I wear track suits instead of jammies and recently discovered a woolly hat which actually increased my warmth factor by a jacket. Those old people who wore night caps didn't wear them for fashion obviously.
Hot water bottles stay warm much longer than any of the bags of which I have quite a variety of shapes and sizes donated by the girls.
One of the, I think gel fillings goes hard and lumpy in about a year with me. My favourite is a soft tube about 18 inches long and 4 inches wide, lovely hanging round the neck, across shoulders or my lap, even sitting on it! I've had it a couple of years and it's had plenty of use, great for aches and pains or crampy muscles. I love it.
The only problem is, that originally it had a lavender fragrance, now it just smells! Pretty horrid, but works like a charm.
Reading all your tales of woe over boiler troubles almost makes me glad that I don't have central heating! At least having a mixture of electric heaters, gas fires, an electric shower and an 'ascot' type water heater, means if one stops working, I can turn to another.
