Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
What you should have done Grandad is to buy it and then use your Photoshop skills to keep modifying pictures of it so as to convince us all that you are growing it.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
@Grandad - you should've pick up a bulb and given MrsG the joy of watching it grow!
@H - I have no idea why we call those vents and grills "Registers" but that is the name here. I have a a few on the walls too that are plain white plastic with straight line grill vent holes. I've been looking forever to find decorative ones but nada
I think these plain white ones look cheap and ugly but no way can I find nicer metal decorative ones.

Must be a US/Canada thing LLL. On Amazon they come up on Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/heating-vent-cove ... e=13400071
I suppose it is a bit like bonnet vs hood on an automobile

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
@Grandad - I actually have the register that is the ninth on your list via Amazon and I have them on all the floor vents BUT there are also wall vents. The wall ones are larger i.e. 1 meter long x 14 inches high (just approximate on the sizes) and they're also white plastic. I've looked forever to find the brass/bronze coloured ones that match the floor vents/registers but we don't sell them here.
If you're extremely lucky you might be able to find an old antique one and usually they're super decorative and made of iron but they're hard to find. I'd rather have one that matches the floor registers than look at these big white or off-white plastic wall vents.
One day I'll find 'em. Just need to find the right specialty store.

Wow H - your amaryllis just zipping along. I'm not home so can't take a picture and report on how mine is doing but I did ask my daughter and she referred to the empty pot
I had sitting on my table - on other words it hasn't really started to bloom.
Yours is doing really well
I'll photos of mine after Dec 3rd

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
My first photo was taken on Nov 14th. The flower bud was barely peeking out from the root bulb. Been away so haven't had a chance to really do photos every couple of days but now - almost 3 weeks later
TA DAH!!!!

Standing tall and proud!

(But - unlike H's mine doesn't have leaves - just the one main bud shaft)

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
Oooh! I am so jealous now, I wonder if I have a duff one, all leaves and no flower.
But there again maybe yours just felt so neglected that it decided to flower before you killed it off
@ Kiya, well mine certainly wont be in flower by Christmas, but LLL's might just make it
And your bulbs were Hyacinths

Re: Amaryllis Challenge (open to all)
Since we have 20 days to go it is possible mine will be budding out for Christmas. No skill really on my part. I'm sure the guys at the Greenhouses or wherever they grow these have them so genetically modified they can tell time!
But - hopefully it will bloom for Christmas.
There are 2 buds and actually 1 leaf stock. Dunno why I'm not getting leaves (which is ok I guess) but I do wonder if the growers have so genetically modified these that they are really ONLY geared to produce a flower and die.
I've tried and tried and tried to grow these again and they won't - BUT - I'd have a hope for the one you have H. It seems to be growing a more 'normal' path. Like a regular plant and flower. If I was guessing I'd guess yours might just grow and live to flower another day whilst mine I'm certain will be toast.
