It doesn't always work out

Post by Horus »

I decided to knock up a simple Jam Sponge cake this afternoon, just the job for my visitors tomorrow with a nice cuppa when they arrived.
The Lamb Stew was on the go and looking really tasty, just the job for a snowy weekend.

I only had the one tin with a removeable band so decided to make the mix in two bowls and bake each one seperately, so far so good, flipped the first one out and turned it upside down ready for the jam. Nice flat base and not sunk on the top.

Gave it a good slathering of Tesco's Finest Strawberry Jam, looking good :up
5902

Took out the second cake, :urm: something not quite right, a little too Aerated maybe :tk
5901

Then I realised I had used the wrong tin, it was too big and the cakes were too thin :sd Oh well nothing else to do but sprinkle some caster sugar on top and hope for the best
5903

I shall call it "Ladies Delicate Sponge Cake" and insist it is made thin specially for people with petite sized hands. ;)

Now come on Horus, what's going on. It's lady GUESTS (plural) now so have you got something you are not telling? And don't try the 'long lost cousins or aunts' story. There are too many ladies hands appearing in your pictures ;)

The ladies definitely thought the cake was dainty! :) :) (Pinkies never lie)

And now - fess up - how many pieces did you all eat? Did the ladies come back for seconds and thirds? :cake2:

Was there any leftovers for poor wee Annie? ;) ;)

It was a full social calendar yesterday - one of those can't miss events so sorry I didn't get there to you place 'til quite late Horus! Now I need to ask what did I miss? Who did I miss? What was the meal and what was talked about? (Hopefully not me! ;)

The boys were super happy with the cakes. I didn't make them ;) however the daughter did as they were dairy free, gluten freen and I don't know what all else FREE (allergies). Over the years she has gotten very good at these FREE wonders and these cakes were really quite tasty and moist. The other grandparents (who have all the allergies - well not really they have celiac disease) quite enjoyed them and I know were asking for the recipe.

The boys wanted a "theme" for their cakes which translates to meaning they wanted mostly the toy on top. The red and blue guy was a member of Paw Patrol (cartoon of dogs who are law enforcement) and the yellow guy's name was "Drip" and he is either part of the Disney/Pixar "Planes" or "Cars" crew. The boys couldn't get the candles blown out fast enough to get at the toy on the top of the cake as these 2 guys are their favourites. If it has wheels they'll like 'em!

You missed a most enjoyable evening LLL. Kiya flew down to East Midlands where I picked her up on my way north. The lamb stew was really tasty and with creamed potatoes and, my favourite, broad beans, the dishes were cleaned. A compliment to the Chef.
Hope you can meet Horus's other lady guests sometime. Great company and a good sense of humour, just like you. ;)
I dropped Kiya off to catch the last flight at 11.30 and got home myself at 2 AM.
;) ;) ;)

I think you will find that little Annie did the dishes Grandad ;)
I must say it was very pleasant company all round and they were delightful dinner guests, Kiya did offer to run the vacuum cleaner around and clean up the crumbs that Grandad dropped on the carpet, but I would have none of it and Grandad even asked me for a few recipes to try at home :up

Good to know Little Annie is adept as an after-dinner-cleaner-upper!

@H - Are you really doing all that cooking by yourself solo? ;) (Am meaning, as a man, you/they are usually not that adept in the kitchen i.e. Grandad & my own father - are you really really really doing all this exotic baking stuff on your own? (if Yes I'm real impressed cause I for one sure couldn't do it)

LLL, I can assure you that all the images of food that I put on here are prepared and made with my own fair hands, with no assistance whatsoever. Most recipes are of my own making with the odd one copied from a book as in the Douphanoise Cottage Pie which was a nice twist on the traditional method and credited to Mary Berry, although with most recipes I usually add my own variations to the standard stuff :up This week I shall be making a Pasta dish for Wednesday evenings dinner, :eat unless of course I have another idea beforehand ;)
