Kiya I would love to have the opportunity for we four regulars on here to be in a room at the same time.
LLL with her Canadian accent tinged perhaps with a little bit of American having worked there for many years.
Horus with, I guess, a midlander accent where they call a bUs a buus, and bUtter buutter. ;)
Me with I suppose a south east accent with a hint of London.
And the three of us standing around trying to make out what on earth the fourth person (you dear Kiya) is talking about. ;)

Not far off Grandad, but you need to move my accent a bit further North ;)  you make me sound like a Brummie
My father spoke in a very broad accent and it can still be heard today in some localities today, I maybe sound a bit like the guy in this clip when he speaks normally, but I can also speak in that local dialect if I wanted to blend in, having said that and maybe because I have travelled a lot, I do tend to moderate the way I speak to others and I am often mistaken as Canadian especially in America. :ni:

I could'nt run the vid, I am reading this on a tab in bed while watching Question Time.
I am often thought to be Australian when on holiday? I understand what you mean about adjusting your dialect. My brother married a girl from Staffs and then lived in Burton. In no time he was sounding like the locals. ;-)

All I can say the lingo for my own town of Peterhead stands on its own to no other in the N E Scotland, I know Horus your very good with the Scottish accent with having Scottish friends but not from my part, I guarantee you'd get lost also, just maybe picking up a word here or there & get the jist of the conversation ;) :)

Grandad what fun I would have understanding you three & looking at you completely lost thinking what a heck is she saying

Ah but Kiya, you are forgetting that I am entitled to wear a certain clan tartan and I have lived and worked with people from all over Scotland. The only ones I have struggled with are some of the Islander dialects, I reckon that we could hold a telephone conversation OK.;)

After my time working in the USA I lost the 'sing song' quality to my accent. Can't tell if it is back or not yet. I tend not to really hear 'me' talking.

I did find most Americans can't really hear accents meaning they really can't hear you speak and then deduce if you're from Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, Scotland.......

Opened the vid this morning H and that accent is the one I am familiar with for relatives in Staffs and Derby.
I have not seen my bro for some years now but he spends 6 months each year in Brisbane so goodness knows what his accent is like now. Kentish/Staffordshire/Aussie?

I have friends in the Glasgow area and they can be difficult to follow but other friends from the Hebrides, I find their accent soft and clear.

I have worked with plenty of Glaswegians and the biggest problem is usually the speed at which the speak that makes them hard to follow at times.

I have added this other short clip from Kiya's video, again unfortunately it is only a snippet due to file size allowances. Even though it is under the 5MB it does at times seem very slow to run, but that may be down to me having a slow internet recently. It should run quite smoothly without any jerky motion once it has downloaded (once again click the Map Room.MP4 text below the video and wait) but if it doesn't and you cannot see smooth flowing transitions between images then maybe try running it later in the day.

Opens perfect with me automatically to my desktop with Windows Media Player......love the music :) :)

Btw... Oh aye Horus it did escape my mind your entitled to wear the kilt :) that I would love to see ;)

Glaswegians don't even understand me/us

When I say about my lingo/accent, I should really say we in Peterhead speak with the " fisher " tongue even though there are many more fishing towns around our coasts, each has their own.

Its like in times gone by with the auld fisher women knitting their men folks gansies, each town had its own knitting pattern for their men, that so - if any men lost at sea with nothing to say who they are if found, at least they would be recognised belonging to the town they belong to if found by their gansie.

Oh I love that word 'gansies' must dig mine out as the weather is getting colder

It is also quite poignant that such a lovely tradition as the individual town patterns has it’s origins in a basic necessity should a tragedy at sea occur.

Horus I understand from what you said before on this thread that there is a limit for mp4 video files of 5Mb. What I can't see is how you actually upload a video file. Can you help please?
Thank you. :up

Yes Grandad, it is fairly straight forward to do, but first of all ensure that your file is less than the allowed 5MB by hovering your mouse over it and checking the file size that will display with the other file info. Once you are happy, start your post as usual, but make sure you are in the 'Full Editor' mode. Look down below the text box and you should see a list of acceptible file types 3gp, csv. docx, m4a, mov, mp3, mp4 etc. and below that a 'Browse' button. Click on that and then navigate to where you have saved the file you want to upload, now select it and choose the 'Open' option at the bottom of the window. Once the file has uploaded (it may take a little while) it will appear in the 'Browse' box. All you need to do now is to choose the "Add the File" option just below and it will place it into your post, it works the same as an image, so you can move the code around within your post and you can also see if it runs OK by using the 'Preview' option. :up
