Cruising - Honduras - Roatan

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

Roatan is the largest island of Honduras and we docked in a town called Coxen Hole. Primary language is Spanish however most of the people I met on my day of wandering about there also spoke English. Most everybody else on the ship went scuba diving and snorkeling as apparently the coral reef is fantastic. I was happy walking on land for the day and poking about the town. Have full intentions of returning there - my kind of place - slow, relaxed and real.

Coxen Hole is basically a one business street town and most of the businesses are pretty small. Most of the selling to tourists seems done by individuals who set up shop for the day and many are not carrying large amounts of inventory. There was absolutely no hawking or touting or hassle. Everybody was more than pleasant and seemed genuinely happy to see tourists walking about.

Bought a coconut from this fellow. Am really partial to drinking coconut water and tend to believe it therapeutic

This fellow was a real card on the docks. He saw my camera and asked me if I wanted to talk his photo throwing his net. I said 'sure' and he gathered it all up, showed me how he held part of the net in his mouth and threw it. He got a fair haul too which he was collecting to use as bait for other fishing

These two photos are examples of the electrical system there. Thought they 'sort of' fit and could be compared to electrical systems in Egypt! ;) ;) Have no idea how anybody figures out which wire might be loose if electricity ever needs to be checked!

Very interesting LLL and great photos showing candid shots of the place and the people. I particularly like the first fisherman picture, full of character, that one is a ‘keeper’ in my opinion. Your camera seems to be working well and getting colourful and sharp images and no doubt even better on a sunnier day. That electrical system looks a nightmare nearly as bad as some I saw in Ikedja near Lagos, unfortunately I have no pictures of it. Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures and look forwards to seeing more of your travels. :up

Thanks LLL, I enjoyed that little summary and the pictures. :up

We usually mention pictures that catch our eye and for me the man casting his net and the guy sitting on the bar with coconuts on his wheel barrow are my favs :up All nice and colourful but I tend towards people candids myself...

Lovely LLL thankyou. Looks like they use a lot of corrugated iron and I think I saw an asbestos roof too. Thats a great net throwing photo. How do you get on with cash ? do you have to change money on the ship before every country ?
