What is Hurghada like?
I would be interested to know from people (Ex Pats) living in Hurghada to what the place is like, for example, all year round weather, general shopping, (Food and Clothes) Medical treatment and clinics, average property price for a 2 bedroom place, Nightlife, and cleanliness, also what is the traffic like, do they obey traffic signals in general, do they obey traffic flows etc etc.....
All replies would be appreciated, many thanks.

Re: What is Hurghada like?
Your IP shows you are already in Egypt, what part of Egypt are you in?
Traffic Rules - same like anywhere else in Egypt
Shops - same stuff you can get elsewhere in Egypt
Though the nightlife is miles better than probably places like Luxor and even Cairo.
Great medical clinics too, though it depends from which part of Egypt you are living in now to make any comparison.
There is 1,000's of estate agencies in Hurghada, so a quick internet search in Google should provide you with many websites so you can get a rough price, places in Hurghada are cheaper to elsewhere in Egypt, most probably due to that there is 1,000's vacant.

I thought that Keefy had already answered your questions, but price wise you should have checked out a few while you were there, but as you are familiar with the forums then the RED Sea one should get you more response as along with Sharm that is where most of them are living.

Are you fed up with Luxor already Choccy? Or is it that there is no Jaguar service agent there?

Better than whingers and back biters though eh Choccy? Now what exactly is it you want to know about Hurgarda that Keefy has not already told you? Maybe if you asked a specific question then someone could answer it for you.

Re: What is Hurghada like?
Sorry Choccy, never been to Hurghada and no desire to go there. Been to Egypt more than 20 times but stay clear of the sun, sea and sand holiday areas.Choccy wrote:My Goodness this forum seems to be full of Comedians, so it looks like there is nothing to say about Hurghada...
But if you are looking to the future do you plan to sell the lovely villa that you have invested so much in.....and how is property selling in Luxor at present?

Re: What is Hurghada like?
OK Choccy (now I know your in Luxor)
TRAFFIC - Driving is a lot better in Hurghada, the roads are better, yet like elsewhere in Egypt there is those that don't follow the rules like, speeding, driving the wrong side of the road, going through red traffic lights etc., yet you will notice hell of a difference (better driving in Hurghada) when you compare it to Luxor.
SHOPPING - Of course the shops are miles better (again when compared to Luxor) on the clothes side though you will find it's more expensive due to the fact that there is proper shops (not Chinese fakes) like ADIDAS, TIMBERLAND, LEVI'S etc. and of course for other shopping and a huge European supermarket there is Senzo Mall: http://www.senzomall.com/
MEDICAL: plenty of top run medical centres with professional staff (again excellent when compared to Luxor)
PROPERTY: Like I said previously, it would be best to do a google search and go through the many estate agencies to get a rough average price, you can get a 1 bedroom decent flat with sea view from as little as 15,000 uk pounds.
EDIT: BTW: if you are thinking of buying I know a honest guy (who is licenced in this business) that will find a place for you at the cheapest price possible, also everything will be 100% legal. (no headaches) due to the problems in Egypt (lack of business etc.), many are selling at rock bottom prices.

Re: What is Hurghada like?
Choccy I am sorry to keep banging on about this, but in the past you have ignored good advice from people who know and got yourself into trouble, so why don’t you speak to people like Keefy who can give you the information you have asked for as he is in that business himself and he will know the answers regarding property values better than most?

Re: What is Hurghada like?
Thanks DJ I will take what you say, and contact you in the future, I am only laying seeds for the future at this moment of time. But I am really beginning to think Luxor has had its time, there is nothing happening, and no one wants to take responsibility for anything. It may be due to two main things, 1) the lack of finances to be able to do anything, or, 2) Nobody wants to do anything until the elections are over and done with, but at this moment of time Luxor seems to be a bit lawless, with no regulation, and certainly scruffy, its been going downhill over the past 2-3 years, and is certainly not the Luxor I used to enjoy and love. To put it in a nutshell, the place is out on a limb for getting places due to very limited flights in and out, and there is no competition due to this, I cannot see investment coming in for a long while because there is no or very little skilled labour. Regarding tourism, well in my opinion and my opinion only, the tourist market is a small one for Luxor and a specialist one too. This market will take absolute years to get to anything like normal, so what does Luxor do? it will either have to change or it will just rumble along the bottom, like it is doing now. But no one wants change do they? ell us often enough! So its a catch 22 position. The only people that will change Luxor are the local people, so they have to decide if they want change firstly, and if they decide they do want change they need to say what changes they want.

Re: What is Hurghada like?
I often wonder if people like Choccy are ever really happy regardless of where they are living? This is not a criticism, but you seemed to have moved about quite a bit and appear to be looking for somewhere to belong, but you don’t quite know where that place is. Like many others I have travelled and lived in other parts of the world and eventually they are all the same, nowhere will ever fulfil your ideals, very soon you start to notice the dirty streets, the lack of reliable facilities and services, the shops that smell, the inferior goods, the lack of services and familiar things and it all starts to grate upon you after a while. Everything that first attracted you to the place starts to fade as you get used to your new surroundings, the mysticism disappears and the irritation starts to set in.
There is a famous painting by Poussin that hangs in the Louvre in Paris and called "Les bergers d'Arcadie" ("The Arcadian Shepherds") It depicts a group of shepherds living in Arcadia, considered to be a perfect place or a Utopia. They are looking at an inscription on a tomb which reads "Et in Arcadia ego" which roughly translates from the Latin to mean “Even in paradise I am here” the ‘I’ being the spectre of death. So what I am saying is that nowhere is ever going to be your ideal and something will always disillusion you regardless of where you end up living.
Ruby S, I just think it does not get a lot of visitors

Re: What is Hurghada like?
Your wrong there Horus, God willing I have another 10 years before I know exactly where I will be, but in the meantime, with being retired myself and wife want to do what we want to do. With all due respect no one can tell a person what to do or maybe even comment what they feel they should do, or not. I still have a long way to go to catch my parents up, 12 moves in 50 years of marriage I am on 4 moves in 25 years. However myself and wife have a clear way forward on where we intend to end up, but before we do we want to do our own thing, amd enjoy what we are doing. At 61 going on 18 we would love to think the next ten years will be an adventure and nothing else. Where we live at the moment is going down hill and there seems to be no stopping it, so we do not want to fester and waste the next 10 years. On saying that who knows what will happen after the elections, personally I believe not a lot, due to the financial problems and general lack of Government funds, not the governments fault by no means, but to replace the finances to a more stable time will take time. In the mean time being free agents its up to us to seek adventure.

Re: What is Hurghada like?
No one is telling you what to do or where to live Choccy, but I have followed your trials and tribulations for many years over on the Blue side and from what I and (many others) can see is that you keep telling us that you are experienced in this and that, but often come across as the exact opposite whether that be buying property or choosing where to live. All I am saying is that what you describe is nothing new, it is typical of the disgruntled expat who realises that all is not what it is cracked up to be in their chosen country so don’t imagine that you are the only person to retire and plan out their future, done it, worn out the T shirt and seen plenty of others like yourself fail in the process, but I wish you luck.
