Why I feel happy today

Post by Horus »

Well after a poor start to the day I opened my mail and there was a letter from the Douglas Macmillan Hospice which is a local charity that helps cancer sufferers in the (usually) terminal part of their illness. Although my Anne did not die as a result of cancer, she did however always support the charity and often put money into their collection boxes especially when doing her shopping. Although flowers were very welcome at her funeral I also said that anyone who wished to donate to a charity instead or as well as, that I would like the donations to the Douglas Macmillan Hospice. A considerable amount was raised, something that surprised me a little as there were also lots of floral tributes.

Today’s letter was to thank me for the gift and for considering them at such a difficult time in my life. At the bottom of the letter was an address and a web-site, so out of curiosity I had a look and it was there that I came across something of interest. Not too far from me is the Trentham Estate which is fast becoming a main attraction since it was purchased and had lots of money invested in it, although you pay to enter the grounds there are still lots of open public access places within the estate and I sometimes take Little Annie there for a walk in the woods.

It appears that a large part is being reinstated as Oak woodland and it is part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations that will see 60 new Diamond woodlands created throughout the country as a living memorial to celebrate the event. What took my attention was an invitation by the Douglas Macmillan Hospice to make a donation and have a dedication for someone as part of the planting scheme. You don’t get a specific tree, but you do receive a certificate to say that one of the trees was dedicated to the memory of and in the name of your loved one, which I thought was a great idea.

So there we have it, a few taps on the keyboard and it was all done, so what could be more fitting? I love to walk especially in nice woodland and it will be somewhere for me to take little Annie and hopefully watch it mature over the years although I realise I will never see it reach full maturity, but maybe my decendants will and it will be a lasting tribute to my dear wife, I may even sprinkle a few of her ashes there just to make it a bit more of a special place for me. Now I don’t want anyone to feel sad reading this and I certainly am not and in fact I am feeling very happy that I have done this thing today, it has given me a lift.

Here is a link if anyone wants a look:

What a wonderful tribute. Truly lovely and Trentham looks to be quite a charming place too.

I haven't looked yet through the entire site but was drawn to the Monkey section. That would be totally fascinating for children to be taken there. Breakfast with moneys - bet quite a few snatches of toast are made! ;)

Love the idea of the Diamond Jubilee too. Really interesting H. Will explore the site and read more.......

The gardens are very nice LLL and the monkeys are in a large open area and you just walk through it along a path and the monkeys are in the trees and running about on the grass, great for kids.

No, it is all running slow and if you click the 'submit' button just trust that it will do it.........eventually

It is worth 'wiping' what you have typed with your left button on your mouse then Right click>copy just in case you lose anything. I tend to do that particularly for a fairly long post. For very long ones I prepare as a 'word' document then copy and paste into the forum panel.

The thing about wiping and copying is that it retains everything even 'highlights' and photo references so you lose nothing...

Oh dear, I'm waffling, sorry, just that when the forum runs slowly you don't know if your post has submitted or not..........off for a cuppa.........byeeeee :)

Been finding the forum going slow............

I didn't realize here the Queen's Diamond Jubilee was coming up and I think the idea of creating woodlands is a really good one. Not sure who thought of it but it is definitely something that is a real tribute and, to me, seems to fit well with Queen Elizabeth.

LLL, as Elizabeth became Queen when her father died 6 Feb 1952, last year was officially her 60th as Queen. However as she was not crowned until 1953, this year has been the official Diamond Jubilee.

Victoria, the longest reigning Monarch, was Queen for 63 Years and 216 days. Elizabeth II has been Queen for 61 years and 225 days and as she seems to keep in very good health, it is very likely that she will exceed Victoria as Queen and become the longest reigning UK Monarch ever. Indeed her mother lived to be 101 years old when she died in 2002.
