Getting grumpy

Is it just me or does anyone else get irritated by some of the things that get posted on other forums. The one that really annoys me is when someone tries to justify something bad in Egypt by comparing it to somewhere else, usually the UK. At the moment we have people making the absolutely ludicrous claim that UK roads are worse than Egyptian ones :))) :))) I can honestly say that I have driven all over and the roads and driving standards in Egypt scare the crap out of me, I have to wonder how long it was, or if ever these people have driven in the UK. For all its faults (mainly because we are a small country) We must have one of the best road systems and driving standards in the world. Because we are a small island any major road works will natuarally cause delays, but those delays are for safety reasons and not because of bad roads. Egypt's roads are little more than tarmac laid on sand, they are badly maintained and dangerous, in addition they are poorly policed and quite dangerous

Look at the figures for Egypt:
Road deaths per 100,000 population = 12.8 deaths
Road deaths per 100,000 vehicles = 148.7 deaths

UK figures:
Road deaths per 100,000 population = 2.9 deaths
Road deaths per 100,000 vehicles = 5.1 deaths

I rest my case, why do people make such daft claims? is it because they have to defend Egypt at any cost? Do they have other motives like trying to look good to those people who issue visas, hoping to impress them? or do they live in such a small insulated cocoon that they are unaware of what the outside world is really like?

The other thing that really grates are those people who post just a link, no explanation or comment of their own, just a link? Do they really think that the rest of us have not seen or read the same thing? Just how stupid (or lazy) is it to just post a link to a web site without any explanation? A bit like saying " I have read this book, but I cant be arsed to tell you what it is about, but if you want to know what I was reading go to this website" my own reaction is to just ignore the post as it tells you nothing :stp

I find most of what is posted on L4U as very boring actually. I often wonder to me why I even bother looking there. The posts are repetitive i.e. Visa issues, flights and the endless standard statements they all make in response to almost anything.

I get it that some on there i.e. Winged Isis are posting because they're bringing or connected to tourists there and have tourist businesses to maintain via their husbands and so must maintain a strong attitude that "Luxor is safe" even if bombs are going off on the streets but I find the endless Luxor is safer than "Insert City Name here" - well - just plain boring. Same/Same argument if they're comparing roads, health care, education and on and on and on.

What is happening with those living in Luxor smacks of small town people who do not carry a global awareness. Their lives are simplistic and they definitely just cannot absorb the larger wider world and how global issues affect everybody.

Some only post links and never comment or relate the links to anything.......THEN there are the "HAS" sayers and the infrastructure complaints. Well - you're living in a third world country - what do you expect?

You are correct, they do live in a third world country so should not complain about where they live, it is their choice. However when someone makes a comment about the reality of life there it is no good trying to deflect that criticism by giving a spurious example of somewhere else as being worse, it just shows their lack of perception. LLL, are you talking about the same people who deny they have any vested interest in Egypt, then ask questions on behalf of "their clients"?

Do you not think a percentage of those vehicle road deaths in directly related to their lack of MOT or servicing or maintenence of their cars and bikes? Omar came with me to the garage on thursday morning and was a bit baffled that the kennels jeep had gone in for a service in November, and was back again. I was trying to explain the MOT system. The thought of a vehicle getting its full service, and then being tested 5 months later, and if need be more work done was fascinating  (In fairness, In egypt, he changed his motorbikes oil every 2000km and checked its tyres and electrics daily but he isnt the norm!)

I agree with you there Robbo, but the whole aspect of roads and safety are inter related, no good having a nice new stretch of road if someone leaves a drain uncovered or builds their own speed bump. Also if drivers are poorly trained and vehicles badly maintained then that contributes to the whole problem of road deaths.

The nice new stretch of tarmac from luxor to hurghada just means most of the cars drive even faster with the same reckless abandon as before.

The roads in Kent were dreadful when I lived there, maybe they know I've gone and improved them?

We burst two tyres on a 4 wheel horse trailer, and I later saw a few cases by the side of the road who had burst both tyres on one side. You only carry one spare - awkward.......... All in the Cranbrook area.

Just to be fair, my stepson burst both tyres on one side of his nearly new BMW in Egypt and they cost a mint to replace.

Yes I was referring to the ones who link somehow to tourists.

I saw, in Luxor, on Television Street a car come screaming down the street actually HIT a child, a boy, stop. Everybody rushed out got the child on his feet declared it was all OK and off they all went in under 2 minutes before I could even get across the street to help. Everybody seemed to drive like mad fools and the road conditions did not lend to fast driving speeds at all.

IF you want to see bad roads here just try going "off road" which is what all the logging roads are referred to. So bad that IF you opt to take your vehicle "on road" your car insurance won't cover you. Should add you can only go "on road" after 6pm and before 5am as otherwise logging trucks are barreling about and do have the right of way.

Am sure all places have good and bad roads but when you don't have enough money to feed your people you definitely don't have money to fix roads.

But - yes - it does get tiresome listening to the basic same old same old there and the comments from some are very predictable.

I think Horus posed the question in general terms. I am also proud to count myself among the 'Grumpy old men' ;)

There are many things that irritate me but staying with cyber media, I hate most of what is posted on Facebook. I am a member but only have (by choice) very few 'friends'. What gets me is when a friend or friends; and there are only a few that this comment refers to; click the 'like' button for one of their friends and that 'like' gets passed to all other friends who have not a clue who the other friend is and do not have the slightest interest in what he or she is saying.

That is a bit garbled but I am sure you know what I mean. I hardly ever click the like button on any forum but on Facebook it is like a rash and spreads like wildfire to all and sundry who have no connection with the original poster.

Also. why do people collect 'friends' and accept every invitation irrespective of whether they know the person or not. My own granddaughters have many hundreds, approaching a thousand and nobody has THAT MANY friends.

But worst of all is Twitter. No, I am not on that one but to me it is the most pointless and juvenile thing that happens in todays electronic society. :(

@Grandad - I didn't realize that by clicking "like" on FB that ALL my friends get what I've liked.........is that how it goes? Cause if so I must be inundating lots of people with lots of things. I thought only the person who sent it to me got to know if I "liked" what they sent me.........yes? No?

my facebook kennels page is a great marketing tool, as our customers like the pictures of their own dogs, and all their friends see them. Its generated a lot of new customers. My friends list is about 80% dog rescuers and a few real friends thrown in for good measure

I DO 'Unfollow' if somebody's posts are becoming a nuisance but I was not aware that there are other filter options. Facebook does tend to hide things away and not make them readily available. I will have a look. Thanks :up

I think that is a good use of Facebook Robbo. It is commercial, promotes your business, and gives confidence to your customers about the well being of their pets whilst in your care.

I also think FB Groups have a place, they are more like a forum with specific aims and objectives. I am only a member on two but they are for subjects of interest to me.

@RS. I had a look at my profile and also security but could not see how I could block unwanted likes.

Just to stress how likes can spread, if someone on the other side of the world or even in the next town makes a post. All his or her friends will see that post and perhaps some will click the like. That then goes to ALL friends of everyone who clicked the like. If some of those recipients also click like then all their friends get it (the original post) So in just a few clicks, thousands could receive that unwanted/forwarded post.......AND I CAN'T SEE HOW TO STOP IT :xx

On the subject of likes (my pet hate) I have received a post of one of my sons' friends that he 'liked' and the post has attached 146 photos. What the hell? :xx

Bed Time, Nite Nite x ;)

Grandad, I have never heard of what you say. My FB is public but all posts go to my homepage and I decide if I want them on my timeline. I get no one elses likes, you must check your settings. 146 photos ? that is absolutely ridiculous.

My cousin in Australia graduated University about a year ago, got her first real job and now just went on her first holidays to western Australia with several of her girlfriends (4 total). They went driving, went flying in these mini little airplanes, scuba diving. She took photos of everything and has a terrific eye for photography. She just posted something like 269 photos to me on FB (all in a group) and lots of them were absolutely fantastic. If I could figure out how to copy them off FB I'd of been sharing lots on here. She took everything from the flora & fauna, to topography shots from the mini airplane to underwater photos of fish with an underwater camera.

To steal photos, go to the owners page and slide them off to the side onto your screen, then put them in your photo album. Then you can do what you want with them. I never have full screen on my pages, so I can move the luxor page about- ( the 4 things up the top, one is an x . ok? the other makes your page smaller.) Ummm yes thats as clear as mud - I expect you will figure it out .. haaaaa haaaa
