New flower

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

I've never seen this plant flower before. The 'clues' are that it is a really hard to kill tropical houseplant. It is the indestructible variety that are quite common. I've owned these plants for years but have never before seen on flower.....

Any guesses what the name of this tropical houseplant is?

It is my snake plant. I have it in a corner so it gets lots of light but never bright sunlight. I sometimes even forget it is there but it flowered! I've never seen these plants do anything but this one sent up a single stalk with a flower. Definitely the flower isn't lasting long. It is almost all dead now. Am also not sure why this photo came out with a lavender wash on it (my walls are beige and nothing like the colour in the picture)

You have a colour cast in your image, usually when the camera cannot set the 'grey' point, I reset it for you usig software.

All very interesting!

I've never ever seen a Sansevieria in bloom. I've planted a lot of them in Egyptian gardens and they grow very well.

In England they are called Mother in Law's tongue.

This website http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions ... ansevieria has some very interesting posts about how to obtain regular flowering.

Ooops that link doesn't seem to be working. Or is it? Try just Googling Sansevieria flowers ?
Smile! It confuses people

Thanks H - much closer to the real colour. The actual colour of the paint on the walls is called "Linen" which is an off-white to the beige/tan. There are a bizzillion shades of white too! OMG I had NO idea 'til I tried to match the colour of 'white' when I painted trim.

@MD - now that you mention it I've heard these called "Mother-In-Law's Tongue" as well. I've always referred to these as Snake Plants and while I've had them for years and years I've never ever seen one bloom.

I've had jade plants bloom after I've put them outside all summer long and I think next year I'll be putting this one outside too. Spring and lots of the summer was just too busy for me to get around to getting it out there.
