Laptop Problem

Last night I was on my laptop which I use almost exclusively and all was well. It is maybe 2 yrs old (Toshiba). This morning when I went to sign on the screen was black, is black and nothing comes up. I can see the cursor moving on the black screen, I've shut down and powered up several times, checked it was getting power - but my screen is black.
Any idea? Thoughts? Suggestions?
Am not entirely computerless but this is the first time this has ever happened that when I power on nothing happens ...

My immediate thoughts is that for some reason it is not completing the 'boot' sequence, you could try doing the following:
Disconnect the power cord from your laptop, now remove your battery pack, now hold down the Power Button for about 30 seconds. Your problem may be caused by a static build up and this should discharge it, after doing the above replace your battery and power lead and try re-booting again and keep your fingers crossed.

Ah but the battery would have probably fell out when you threw it on the floor in frustration and you would have fixed it yourself when you put it back again

I have something of a short frustration fuse with some things. Haven't ever thrown anything 'yet' but one day
