Last night at 7pm a 4 lane bridge that spans Interstate 5 in the USA collapsed. Nobody killed, some hurt.
An entire section of the bridge fell into the Skagit River. What is significant is is that I just crossed this bridge less than 48 hours prior en route home to Canada. It is part of my main travel route. Gave me a shiver when I saw the breaking news on TV. I crossed at 2am, the bridge is out in the country, could have been really worse......
Haven't heard details yet but apparently, as per the news, this bridge had been declared "functionally obsolete."
Saw it on our Breakfast News LLL at about 7am this morning. When they said it was in Washington State I thought that you would probably know that bridge......but could not have imagined that you crossed it not too long before. It was probably already weakening....
As per News here now apparently a big semi truck carrying a huge oversized load crossed it just before it collapsed. This truck allegedly stayed in the passenger lane (vs moving to the passing lane more to the middle of the bridge) and part of the load hit something related to the structure of the bridge. It was 20 or so minutes later that the bridge collapsed.
A man travelling in the other direction actually saw the bridge go down but was too close to stop his car and flew off the edge and into the water below............Ewwwwwwww just gives the shivers thinking about this.
Few people hurt but all basically ok.
In the State of Washington there are huge issues with the roads around Seattle which is waterfront. Most of the ground goes straight UP. Nothing is level for very long. All roads are overcrowded and new roads are desperately needed but wehre to put them? Tunnels are out because the ground is too unstable and many of the existing bridges and overpasses are old. There is always news about cracks and structural problems. An earthquake could be totally devestating to the entire area.
A man on his Harley was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will...
