Soup and soap are one of the few things my husband
always mixes up when speaking English, the other most common is oil and onions, but at least he now knows he's got it wrong almost immediately, so corrects himself, with a laugh. Wish I had so few mistakes with Arabic! My most common ones are the words for pigeon and bath, and water and number 100, sigh.

WI, you are much braver than me even
attempting to speak Arabic! Mine is almost non-existent!

I love the 'Rose Beef' sandwiches with sheebs. When I ordered it made the waiter 'habby.'

It took me a while, but.... aubergine???
This sent me looking for a menu photo I took in Hurghada last January. It had a section called Oriental Appetisers (me, I was imagining handsome young arab men.... Oops! Sorry, I digress! :oops2: ).
Possible choices included:
Metabel (?), Cole Sloe (Slaw), Ughurt (Yoghurt) and Aborigine (which, as an Aussie has always amazed but eluded me). Until now. Having read and guessed at translating your post, RS, I think they also meant aubergine on our menu! So, thanks, one mystery solved!

) But what is "Metabel"? We could only come up with vegetable. :dun:
