Minya Criminal Court sentenced a low-ranking police officer Omar Ahmed, 28, to one year of labor in prison on Thursday after he was convicted of attempted murder.

Ahmed was convicted of shooting Taher Mohamed Rabei, 25, a farmer in Minya Governorate on 16 July 2011 during a dispute over who would have his hair cut first in a barber shop. The police officer shot the victim in the right foot, the chest and the head.

The court, headed by Judge Abdel Azizi Farouk, senior judges Medhat Mahmoud and Mohamed Zakaria, prosecutor Mustafa Murad, and secretary Essam Tantawy, decided to seize the arms and ammunition used by the suspect and to make him pay lawyer fees.

An official at Minya Security Department said that the police officer has been absent from work since 15 March 2012.

He added the authorities will intensify efforts to arrest Ahmed and implement the court ruling in the case.

Well I cant get my breath, shot in the right foot, the chest and the head, and the policeman only gets one year jail....

A friend of mine who had a few weeks off from the army due to some medical problem, got 6 months added to his service in the army (he completed his original 2 years and 2 months) but did not do the extra 6 months added due to his father taking him out cause it was wrong what they was doing to him, he now his serving 1 year in a military jail cause of this.

Wow - that sort of sentence sure IS a deterrent to other Police isn't it? (NOT)

I kinda think that to maintain social order and peace it necessitates Law Enforcement to be operating on a "Code of Conduct" with "Professional Ethics" and a Board that enforces standards for their own. These standards should be articulated, clearly understood by all (public and the profession) so that the public can develop trust and respect for the Profession. Am kinda thinking this is sorely lacking there.
