Great choices Kiya and just because you are an soppy romantic I have chosen this one by Dolly Parton which of course she wrote and recorded well before Whitney Huston. It is from the movie "The best little whorehouse in Texas" and it also starred Burt Reynolds who she really did fall in love with. I can recall sitting in a drive in Movie in Port Elizabeth in South Aftrica oh so many years ago, soft top down, balmy night air and watching this particular film while sipping a Lion Lager. ;)

I love many of Dolly's songs too but I never knew she wrote that one.
I've heard of the film but don't think I've ever seen it, did it end in the same way as the Bodyguard?

Yes it does have a happy ending, but it is a completely different story, it is loosly based upon this real life event.

Sitting here tonight and thinking of some of the great songs that had real meaning to them and portraying real life emotions, by that I mean they said something to the listener and were writen amongst others by poets like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. I tried to find a decent one by Dylan, but there are none, just lots of people impersonating him, to be honest his singing was bloody awful but the words were great. So here’s a little collection of various artists singing songs with a story to them.

Paul Simon with, Slip slidin’ Away

Leoanard Cohen with Hallelujah, used in the Shrek movie

Peter Paul & Mary, singing Blowin in the Wind another one written by the master Bob Dylan

Joan Baez one of the best protest singers ever singing, Me and Bobby McGee

Finally a great song from Cat Stevens when he had a proper name, Father and Son

OK folks. It's the middle of the day and you've got me reaching for the tissues. Too much nostalgia. To many beautiful lyrics, lovely melodies and harmonies and special distinctive voices. :hp :cc

Glad you enjoyed them, here are a few more upbeat ones that I am sure you will all remember

A very popular group at the time, The Tremeloes with, ‘Silence is Golden’

Another popular group Herman’s Hermits, ‘Silhouettes on the Shade’

A really soppy one from the one hit wonders Paul & Paula with ‘Hey Paula’

A real oldie from the early Rock’n’Roll era, Ricky Nelson with ‘Hello Mary Lou’

Another great and sadly missed singer, The big ‘O’ Roy Orbison with ‘Only the Lonely’

Another from the Rock’n’Roll era and much loved by the ladies, Bobby Darin with ‘Dream Lover’

I met Herman and his Hermits. Even had supper with them. This was way, way back and they must have been doing a summer season in Great Yarmouth - probably Brittania Pier. My aunt & uncle had a 'Family Hotel' there and my brother and I would go for a weeks holiday in the summers - that is until I was old enough to go and work for them. Uncle was very involved with the theatre/performers benevolent group and there were always show bizzy folks walking in and out to see him or come for a snack after a performance. It was a 'Resident's Only' type of hotel but Show Biz was allowed! Anyway HH's were very sweet with a shy northern lass who'd heard them on the radio. Ah Memories! :)

@ Hepzi, glad they invoked a few happy memories for you, did you know he played Stanley Fairclough in Coronation Street way back, when he did some acting? Incidentally they also outsold more records in one year than The Beatles & The Rolling Stones combined. ;)

@ Kiya, never you mind, your choice of music is OK by me, :up but I bet if Roy knew just how many modern records were actually remakes of our songs from yesteryear he would no be mocking you so much. I think I will start another music thread where we can post old songs that have been re-recorded, then you can quote a few at him to get your own back. ;)

Kiya, I forgot to say that the guy in the first Roy Orbison video on the motorcycle looks amazingly like James Dean, but maybe that was the idea. Believe it or not I once saw Roy Orbison, Del Shannon & Trini Lopez all on the same bill and I think the ticket cost me £1. I was a Del Shannon fan and my mate was a big Orbison fan, so when they came up on the same bill I bought us tickets. One thing for certain was that they all sang live and they sounded exactly like their records did.

Probably my favourite, just listen to the build up towards the end. The Big ‘O’ with ‘Running Scared’

Del Shannon, with ‘The Swiss Maid’

Trini Lopez, with ‘If I Had a Hammer’
