Re: A Phil Spectre tribute
Great choice Kiya, I once saw them playing live before they were really famous.
The use of a Hammond organ gives it a memorable sound and I suppose like most people I know the words, but haven’t got a clue what its all about. There are another two verses that are never sung, but if read them carefully it is probably a story of seduction.
You can read them here:
She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died
If music be the food of love then laughter is its queen
and likewise if behind is in front
then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
and attacked the ocean bed
Continuing the theme of hard to understand lyrics, I thought about another great example, fabulous song, but lyrics that made little sense and that was ‘Nights in White Satin’ which when I first heard it all those years ago, I thought it was Knights in white satin.
Nights in White Satin, the Moody Blues

Re: A Phil Spectre tribute
Here are a few lesser known songs by the Bee Gee's
"Don’t forget to remember me" sounding more Country & Western

"Saved by the Bell", an early one with Robin giving it full throttle

"First of May" great song

Great choices Horus I remember them all so well I bet if you were to ask the younger generation they wouldn't know of the brother Andy of the Bee Gees.

I suspect Hepzi can remember him Kiya, but like most ladies she is not going to admit her age, Mrs H is always 21 when asked.

.........
Looking at the photographs of Andy Gibb in the tribute post above, it's strange how some years he looked nothing like his brothers and at others he was quite clearly from the same pod!

One of my all time favourites from the seventies was "Layla" from Derek and the Dominoes, an early incarnation of Eric Clapton. Mind you, today I think I need to hear Jimmy Cliff singing "I can see clearly now" I can barely see the bottom of the garden for all the mist and drizzle. Is there a sky up there somewhere?

Re: A Phil Spectre tribute
Here you go Morgita, I struggled to find a version that was not featuring Eric Clapton doing his version, but here we are, live from 1984:

Ah! I remember all this old music. I must have heard it on Jimmy Saville's old record club thing he used to present on the radio.

I love " I can see cleary now " & it sure is up here in my little corner, temps reaching 17 degrees, no gloves or scarf needed today when I was out & about & made me think of this 1 from Daniel Boone 1972

Great choice Kiya, Mrs H was up and dancing to that one as I turned the speakers up full bore.
Hepzi, you are letting slip vital information now, we are now homing in on your particular era, Saturday Club indeed!
Here’s one in keeping with the lovely weather we are having today in the UK and it was the very first record ever played on Radio 1

As a Top of the Pops fan do you remember this one Hepzi? another great one by the Move, I love the line “If I put my hand upon her leg she’d hit me with a rule” ……………. typical Mind you that lead singer looks like he should be in Lord of the Rings

Re: A Phil Spectre tribute
Thank you so much Horus for my bit of sunshine today. The mist and drizzle didn't clear all day and my spirits felt as though trampled on by hobnail boots. I can't abide not getting a fix of daylight usually in the form of a short walk in the open air. This is the second day I have scurried to and from the car in a grey mist. Oh to be in Egypt!
