Musings of an old fart

While having a browse around You Tube looking for something else, I came across an old song I had not heard for ages, one thing led to another and I listened to some long forgotten favourites that brought back memories from many years ago. I have always had quite catholic tastes, so my choices flit about quite a bit when I listen to music, I loved the old Country and Western singers, all the way from Roy Roger’s to people like Marty Robins, if the song had a story in it, then I usually liked it. These few are for no other reason than I liked them at the time and haven’t heard them for years.

One of my all time favourites was Marty Robbins and this one takes me back a long way!

I hadn't heard this one for years, but I found myself singing along and still knowing all the words, Mrs H was smiling and no doubt thinking silly old sod.

Another very old one and on the original recording he sounds even more deeper, with a voice like Paul Robeson, we used to try and mimic his singing, but could never get that low.

I prefer this to the Lonnie Donegan version and it always made me smile, we must not take our colonial past too seriously ;)

This is just to even up the mockery and was the version he released for the British market. :)

Finally for no more reason than i was looking at some old American Confederate & Union songs that I remembered this fantastic version by Elvis. Hope you enjoy my choices and they bring back a memory or two for some of you.

OMG Horus, you have set the old nostalgia memory buds opening. :)

The problem I have is remembering all those 'pop stars' of the day. People such as Nat King Cole and Frankie Laine spring to mind immediately. I was, and still am, keen on jazz. And also in the fifties the big bands that used to do the rounds for Friday and Saturday night hops.

The likes of Heath, Macintosh, Delaney, Gould and many more.

Here are a few more links from memory lane......( I don't know how to import the page from Youtube)

Frankie Laine with Rawhide, one of his many hits.

And Nat King Cole with the unforgettable 'Unforgettable' :)

Drummers were always very popular members of the big bands and always had a knock out solo spot that might go on for 10 minutes when the rest of the band would leave the stage. :)

Here is Eric Delaney playing drums with his band in 1957, and then in 2009 in Birmingham aged 85 playing part of 'Skin Deep'

And this is the renowned Louie Bellson playing Skin Deep in 1957

There are lots more hidden away in the grey stuff, perhaps some will now surface. :)

Thought we might have a few flared trouser favourites from the psychedelic era, anyone remember these guys, The Move?

This one gained fame as the first record to be played on the new Radio 1 station in 1967 :)
