As most of you know I have just spent 4/5 days camping in Yorkshire - the main purpose was to attend my nephew's wedding but I also decided to have a look around this part of the UK. Most of the pictures you will see (hopefully) were taken with my new compact - Panasonic FS14 - it was an impulse buy due to the wet weather in York - I'd just happened to pop into Dixon's to shelter from a very heavy downpour.

I'll start with the flowers around the campsite - these all appeared to be growing wild in the lane leading to the campsite.

They must all be escapees from a garden as they are Sweetpeas, Viola's and Pansies by the look of them

Don't tell me someone set fire to your beard

On my way back from York I was passing close to the village of Skelton and saw a sign for a 13C church so I decided to take a gander and came across:

St Giles' Church: Noted in Simon Jenkins' book 'England's Thousand Best Churches', this Grade I listed church is one of the most complete examples of a 13th century English parish church in existence. Built c.1240 by masons employed on York Minster it is a truly remarkable example of the Early English style, with narrow lancet windows, dogstooth moulding and a magnificent south doorway.

It was restored in the 19C and is currently being restored again – what I noticed about this church was that it appears to have stayed the same as when built ie no additions or alterations.

The pictures were all hand-held and taken on auto – no idea why I used auto and why I didn't bracket the exposures. On the netbook they look quite clear but on a bigger screen there may be slight blurring.

The pictures look fine Brian I particularly like the third one of the seated figure.

BB - absolutely GORGEOUS photos! All of 'em are totally lovely. I particularly love the photos of the church. Can't hardly believe the age. Really attests to the workmanship of the times. Everything then was made to last forever.

Just been on the blue side and some bloke called 'Bearded Brian' is talking about his takeaway yesterday in Luxor. Same age, different avatar, what's goin' on?????

I think Keefy might have photos of the nasty deed being done - with a cut throat razor close to my neck I couldn't stop him. Dare not tell them on the blue side as some will use it as an excuse for why I'm finding it different in Luxor this trip or they'll say that I'm being anti-egyptian/muslim.

Don't have any razors so for the time being it is

Still great photos.......and, was curious about one thing. OK BB I mused and mused about this photo all yesterday cause there was something different (to me) about it and it finally came to me in the middle of the night ......The stained glass window at the very top isn't round. First - and this is also baffling me - what is that shape called? Eliptical? The "not completely round window that is pointy at both ends? I don't know the word for that shape....however......

My question or thought is - I don't believe I've ever seen this shape in a really old stained glass windows before. Mostly they're round are they not? Or is this 'kinda round with pointy ends' stained glass window common but I've just not noticed before?

My thinking - I always thought most churches favoured circle windows as symbolic of all the concepts associated with never ending, all phases of life on a never ending continuum etc etc etc....

Don't know if it would apply to stained glass windows LLL but in gemstones that shape is called 'Marquise' :dun:

Brian, are you up to some little trick.....you are posting about Yorkshire and Luxor at the same time....how come.....put me out of my misery :worry:

Thanks Grandad - 'yes' Marquiste is the shape of gemstones in that shape. Maybe the same for stained glass windows. Sometimes in my old age I don't know whether it is just my old brain not remembering or it is something I never knew in the first place.

Common BB - I'm with Grandad on this one - Fess up! Put us out of out misery.........OR have you discovered how to tele-port? ;)

I think Grandad it is just down to Brian being in Luxor, but having his laptop/I phone/I pad with him and he has his Yorkshire pictures on that device. Alternatively he could be getting Keefy to upload them from off his camera card.

I was in Yorkshire last week but didn't have internet in Coxwold where I was staying then only had a day at home before flying off to Luxor but before I left I downloaded the pictures onto my netbook and now have time to write it up.

I agree about the window but there was nothing in the guide book about that window just the 3 lancet window below - and so far google hasn't helped.

Sorry G I thought you were confused by the 'Bearded' and 'Shaved' Brian part.

Forgot to mention - it does have a small round window at the other end of the church but the restoration work covered it from the inside and a tree spoilt the view outside. And as far as I could see there were no widows at all on one side - probably the north side.

The year is going SO fast I lost a week I thought Brians wedding was Saturday just gone............so that's sorted then

Mind you, when I was stupid and confused I was very happy.....La Dee Dah Dee Dah Dee Dah :dun:
