Saw someone had posted about Ol as and had to see what cos I hate the stuff but you are all chatting about potatoe salad! Much more to my taste. Scrolled back and found a few comments about Ol As and have to say those of you who have tried it have the same opinion as me. It's vile stuff, slimy and revolting! I've only had the one cooked with stock and coriander but can easily live without it. They do sell it in some Asian supermarkets here though if anyone wants to try it, it's forozen and I think it says Kol Khas on the pack. In case you are interested it's a traditional dish eaten by Copts on Theophany Feast (12 days after Coptic Christmas) which we just celebrated but I didn't bother making it in my house!!!!

Totally agree with you Clare about it being disgusting and think it was just about the only egyptian food that i could not eat but strange how the egyptians seem to love it :? and it is so bland and tastless

Ah, full circle now!! As threads wander off-topic, then they wander back on-topic . . .:lol:

I can think of nothing more to say about OL . . . but what about the German potato salad? That is served warm . . . with oil and I think it might have bacon??? I haven't had it in a long time but I remember it as being good. I wonder if my tastes have changed???

Sigh, I need to be eating just roast vegetables without a lot of additives (cheese covers up a lot of bad tasting veggies, hehe).

Well as we are back on potatoes what about corned beef hash? That is really delicious but probably not that healthy. If you don't know what I'm talking about it's just fried onions with corned beef mixed in topped with potatoe. I use saute potatoe (liitle chunks fried in oil!!!) but you could do mash and then put under the grill. Yummy!

claire that sounds nice! apart from the corned beef part, i only really like chicken in terms of meat! i cooked today and it actually turned out quite yummy made a kind of spiced grilled chicken, green beans in a butter and thyme sauce with lots of roasted almonds and a whole baked piece of garlic! which sounded reeally strange to me but actually turned out v delicous. I ate way too much as usual :D

Melissa it is yummy, and to make it even more healthy and even yummier, if you use mash, just before the griiling ends take it out pop some strong grated cheddar on top then finish grilling it :P :P ;)

Yep that's the way we fix it here. Usually sweet but one of my son in laws won't eat mayo so we make a separate batch with mustard only and dill relish. but I also add a bit of mustard...dry or wet...to potato salad with mayo.

All sounds good to me apart from any suggestions of adding pickle! Yuck can't stand any sort of pickle at all.
Melissa your chicken dish sounded lovely especially the roasted almonds.

I agree it is nasty but my experience in eating it was quite different. I ate it once in a Chinese dim sum restaurant. It was grated and fried in a ball shape and it was like eating a ball of really dry twigs if I recall correctly.

Yuk Disgusting idea!!
Would rather make some cheese sauce and dump it as you so eloquently put it on some nice fresh cauliflower, now that would be worth making a cheese sauce for!! :P

I love it! Yes it doesn't have much of a flavour but I think , but I absolutely love the texture. It's solid, but mushy too. I know that doesn't make sense, but I promise that it is! We sometimes add it to fiseekh.

Just checking old Kitchen Corner posts to see if anybody has acutally posted any canning recipes. This particular thread seemed to attract lots of attention AND given all the 'drift' that usually takes place did drift far from the intial request for a recipe........and since I've come this far and since 'soon' I'm going to have lots of TIME to do some cooking am wanting to get simple and easy recipes for delicious (of course) and healthy (of course) and non fattening (of course) meals/casseroles that can be made in next to no time (of course)!! :)

Any simple healthy hearty meal ideas using common or not so common ingredients would be appreciated.
