I’m with you there Hepzi, not that I read so much nowadays, but I absolutely hate those type of books with lots of daft names in them such as the ones in Tolkien novels. To my mind if a book cannot get you gripped by page four, then bin it! why should I persevere with a bad author?

The stupid thing is the names weren't that difficult, it was more the way they were introduced. I don't mind if a book doesn't have a character/relationship list, infact I don't expect it, but when there is one it should be more comprehensive than this one. The book was also written with two parallell scenes going on that were clearly going to merge in time but in the begining it just got cluttered.
As I say, I hate to give up on a book, especially when I'm reading it as part of a book group, but even I have to admit defeat every now and then.

I commend you Hepzi for give it a go THREE times. I find with me if I can't get into a book after reading the first couple of chapters I do not have too much difficulty putting it down as there are so many other books I have yet to read that will carry me through with thrilling entertainment.

I'm about halfway through a book called 'Footprints in the Sand' by Sarah Challis at the moment, and thoroughly enjoying it! Hope I'm not disappointed by the rest of it.

Just re-reading some of the posts from Feb when the discussion was about the names of characters. I love "The Girl" trilogy (Dragon Tatoo, Played with Fire etc) by Steig Larsson however the one thing that I found difficult, at first, was to get a grip on was the names. Soooo different it was difficult for them to sink in....... however it was an enjoyable series of books.

Today I started a belated birthday present... The Sweetest of Tears by Nafisa Haji, also author of The Writing on My Forehead. Only up to page 19 so far and already I'm hooked (apart from the fact one of the characters is named Mubarak!)

Last evening I finished reading 'The Ghost Lover' by Gillian Greenwood. Readable but unremarkable!

You must read as fast as Mrs H Ruby Slippers and since buying her that Kindle she never looks up, still it beats all those bags of library books.

Horus, I go to bed with a book in my hand and I get up with a book in my hand!

Reading is as natural to me as breathing!

Good for you Ruby Slippers, I used to read lots, but I am afraid the old eyes get a bit tired nowdays so I tend to listen to audio books out of choice, thats if I get any free time to read or listen.

I spent most of yesterday reading this as I couldn't put it down, and was sad to finish it. She is a great storyteller, in the tradition of the Arabian Nights. Each chapter is told by the different characters. I will have to get the other one now!

Since last Friday I have read:
That Summer Affair by Sarah Challis (thoroughly enjoyable)
C'est La Folie by Michael Wright (the author's 1st year settling in France)
The Secret Children By Alison McQueen (very thought provoking and set in India. Enjoyed it immensely!)
I have now started Lucky Break by Esther Freud. Will let you know on this one!

I am two thirds of the way through 'Far Horizons' by the BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner. He was gunned down in Saudi Arabia by Al Quaeda in 2004 and is now almost totally paralized. His cameraman was killed. An extremely brave man!

He has travelled extensively in his life and is still doing so. I have already read his first book 'Blood and Sand' but this book is about his adventurous travel experiences. I'm enjoying it very much indeed.

@ RS - those two books you've mentioned RS sound really interesting and right my alley as to the type of books I like to read. Will add 'em to my list
