Bigken, maybe you did not allow enough time for a full sat. lock to be achieved the first time. It can take a while first time out. That would prevent the auto take off and RTL from being possible. Have you tried programming waypoints yet for a full auto flight?
I used to fly manually but did find RTL very useful for landings to overcome the vortex effect when landing vertically.
