My late husband (the Vet) said that he would cease to practise if the Channel Tunnel opened, on the grounds that one day there would be an outbreak of rabies, and he didn't want to be in the front line.
Unfortunately/fortunately he died before the tunnel opened, and we now have prophylactic rabies vaccines for humans, but the risk is still there.
I cannot understand how the French are allowed to behave again, in such a disgraceful manner without penalty.

I can see why MD, rabies was and still is very nasty and a common occurrence in Africa when I lived out there. We had to have our dogs vaccinated on a regular basis and they had to display a metal tag on their collars. A neighbour of mine had a large Alsatian and the guy doing the injections was a local person who had great fear of European dogs and so we had to wrap the leash around a post before he would approach the animal. On one occasion as he was about to stick my neighbours dog it attempted to round on him, the result was my neighbour got the jab in his leg

For ages we used to insist on seeing his metal vaccination tag

Simples: Its because they are French

Do you think in the great cycle of the world that in past millenniums we've been at this point before where some areas of the world are crumbling down and bursting at the seams so people are rushing to wherever they can get to? Course once they're there the infrastructure can't sustain so everybody ends up flushing down the proverbial biffy.
I'll mulled that the outcome of this has been that this uncontrolled migration of people has caused groups to ban together, go tribal so to speak and create impermeable borders allowing in NO outsiders.
Not that I see this as a good thing but how does anybody control the uncontrollable that is out of control?
When does the dam crack sufficiently that the little boy and his finger just can't stop the flood and resulting deterioration of everything?
Just the thoughts floating through the grey matter this morning

A lot of truth in what you say

I really have very little to say on this whole immigration subject. We all have our views and opinions as do most of the population of Europe but nobody in authority has the balls to speak up and get public opinion behind them.
As Donald Trump said "build a wall with a doorway through which only authorised immigrants can pass". Not a bad idea, wire fences certainly don't work.
On a personal note, my son who is a driver/instuctor with Eurotunnel is concerned for his job, as are many of his colleagues, especially when you hear nutty suggestions from Cameroon that the tunnel should only operate in the daytime.

I think his suggestion only applies to freight services as that is the main way of getting in, but either way it is a crap way of dealing with a very serious situation, an extremely strong message must be sent and enforced. For example this guy who walked through the tunnel should be put on a high profile trial, handed down a serious sentence of say 10 years with an immediate deportation order to follow. In the meanwhile we should make a high profile case with lots of coverage of requesting his home country to have him back again and serving his sentence there in return for a good wedge of cash from the UK to persuade them, then publicise it on all TV channels to get the word out of what happens to illegal immigrants breaking into the country.

I honestly and truly believe that that is all it would take. One of two, probably three at the most, really high profile FAST with NO APPEALS ALLOWED trials that carry super strong consequences and make sure the WORLD knows! That would stop the influx dead in its tracks.
I personally don't know even if I had the ability to vote in the USA that 10 years ago I would have ever voted for a Donald Trump BUT nowadays I truly believe it takes a big mouthed ardent leader type to grab attention and start making some common sense moves to "save us."
Everything now has gotten so ridiculously out of control and nobody dares speak a word about it like it is going to go away!!! Seems all politicians are so ineffective I really am not too terribly sure what they are really doing other than figuring out ways to pad their own pockets (they can in record time vote themselves wages) and sit for hours and hours honestly doing nothing. I really do believe that if Donald Trump had NOT talked about illegals using the example of Mexicans coming to the USA and pillaging, raping, drugging that this issue would not have even been an issue brought up for the election.
Since the dawn of time we've always had the occasional explorer and those wanderers who just cruised the world seeking a better life but NOW it is mass hordes and nobody is prepared for them. No country can continually include a sheer population mass into their borders to say nothing that we're talking the uneducated the unvaccinated/unhealthy the unsophisticated etc.
None of this is necessarily bad but it puts 'us' at an unnecessary risk and stresses the economics of us...........
So long as our politicians won't take action or take a stand WE are all looking to suffer until we have nothing left to give IMO. (Am not talking personally. Am talking bigger picture)

The thing about Donald Trump, like our own Nigel Farage of UKIP is that they do bring things into the spotlight, all those things that politicians will happily shy away from unless it is dragged under their noses.
