The time spent making a quilt is minimal if one considers that a quilt often become a true family heirloom and is passed down genration after generation.

I've never made a quilt but I have a couple that are well over 100 yrs old that were made by relatives and came to reside with me.

This isn't exactly a typical quilt and I'm not sure that it even IS a quilt but close enough that I'm posting about it here. I purchased this years ago when I was in Trinidad. It was imported from Syria and handmade by Iranian women. It is about the size of a single ged blanket. I have it draped across the back of the sofa.

It is cotton material, not overly heavy. Two pieces of contrasting colour material are hand stitched together. The top layer of material is cut into various "patterns" by hand and then hand stitched into place producing the pattern.

This is a section of the quilt. Very labour intensive to make. Must have taken literally days and hours to hand sew.



It is really quite beautiful in its own right. At the time I also purchased pillow covers for livingroom pillows. They were all in shades of beige, olive greens. None of the quilts or pillow covers were made of 'bright' colours at all. In fact my quilt was probably the brightest one in the store.

I have been twice now, including taking my tour clients. The brothers are lovely and talented people and my clients had a great time and were very happy with their purchases (in case you're wondering, we don't take a commission).

Just get to Bab Zuweila and they are about halfway down the covered street on the left: there is a sign above the shop. If you get lost, call them and someone will come and escort you. I always ask them to sign the back of their work. Tell them you heard Mrs Jenny recommended them.
