WOW! Your hyacinths came on great guns! Are you getting lots of fragrance from them? Were these with the Amaryllis and Paperwhites (the tall white daffodils)? Guess I asking if they were prepared to grow and bloom fast? Or were these just regular outside hyacinths?

If they're just regular hyacinths I might try them next year although regular hyacinths cost a fortune here. They're probably one of the most expensive of all the spring blooming bulbs. Not too sure why but they run probably in the range of $3/bulb although sometimes they come pre-packaged where you can buy 4 for $10. Usually these are mixed so you don't know what colour your getting.

Just given mine a quick rain check and if the blooms are anything to go by then it should look quite nice when fully open.

Hmmm that is definitely interesting if they're selling prepackaged and probably prepared hyacinths. I'll have to look around here but I haven't seen hyacinths - just amaryllis and paperwhites.

Your amaryllis is looking pretty substantial H. Nice height and the colour is similar to mine. Mine got too tall and now that the flowers are coming out it is starting to lean. I'm not going to bother tying it up but am thinking I probably should.

Will do - it is facing into the room right now so hopefully by tomorrow it'll start moving towards the light. It is quite top heavy.

Today the sun popped out for all of 10 seconds so I quickly took a snap of I guess the Grand Finale of the Amaryllis - the blooms of stalk #1 are all out FULL so this is about as good as it is going to get. You can see my second stalk has just cracked open a hair so am figuring by this time next week it should also be in full bloom.

I really do enjoy amaryllis. They definitely give lovely colourful flowers! ;)

@H - your amaryllis should be out in full bloom in the next day or too as well with all 4 buds totally open.

Well here is my last Amaryllis picture for this year, as you can see I have four really big blooms and two are fully open. Each bloom is 6 inches across and the two are more than 12 inches apart face to face, the colour is deeper than I thought it would be and to me looks more Red than Orange. It is just possible to make out the second flower spike in the last picture. :up

We'll have to run another amaryllis challenge next year Grandad and you'll have a chance to join in. They're so easy to grow and you definitely get a wonderful feedback of blooms. They're pretty spectacular and are definitely a conversation piece as they're really hard not to see.

I agree that Grandad could easily join in with this challenge, or any similar ones we may have on the gardening front, we know he is handy at most things so no excuses ;)

Your flowers are so colourful & pretty :)

Does the heads eventually fall off with the size & weight ?

The weight won't affect them Kiya, but the flowers will eventually wilt and fall off and should form a swollen pod behind the flower head.

Its a shame to watch them wilt after all the care & attention that goes with growing them.

Like love and life Kiya, it blooms and flourishes and then we die, but it was a thing of beauty while it lasted. :)

:( :(

I have a confession

I got up this morning and life was good. I'd just made coffee and was sitting in my chair when slowly - well not that slow - my top heavy amaryllis flower broke over onto the table!   (Wow did it shed lots of pollen too)

I was able to rescue it and it doesn't seem the worse for wear but I now have both stalks tied up to paint stir sticks

Photo to be arriving shortly.

Warning!!!!!
Try not to tie the flower stem, but if possible support each flower from underneath. ;)
