anyone tried it?
I was writing some stuff on it and decided to try it.
Nearly fainted when the guy told me the price
1136le a kilo!!
A teaspoon of it cost me 17le!
Anyway it was okay. No real taste as such, just like chewing gum but not so sticky. |

AKA Gum Arabic.
We add a nobble or two to our stock pot for some odd reason - comes out ok though!
Have you tried the mastic flavour ice cream,Ebi? I had a bash at it last year and still can't decide if I enjoyed it or not - tasted most odd! |

No never even seen it
It's like pistachio ice cream. I just can't get my head round pistachio ice cream at all....
Can't imagine I'd like it. It's got a strange taste. Kind of chemically resiny...
I'm annoyed coz I wanted to watch my prog but the bloody scramblers are at it again |

Gum Arabic is something different Goddess.
I was in an Iraqi womans house a while back and tried it and it was horrible.
I tasted another bit a few days ago in Carrefour and it was still horrible
Gum Arabic is much much cheaper to buy and not so fine and clear.
Mastic is much smaller pieces and are almost translucent. More like tears and way more expensive to buy. |

| Is this the same as the Egyptian chewing gum you can get? It's sold in little individual clear plastic packets and is sort of translucent and looks like plastic. I don't like it but my kids love it. It's really cheap though not like what you bought Ebi! It's not like the minty white chewing gum or the flavoured gum you can get. This has it's own 'acquired' taste. |

no idea Claire as I've only seen it in spice barrels, but it looks like rock sugar and has a really unpleasant resiny taste. The mastic is much milder.
It's def an acquired taste |

See if you can find any of the stuff I'm talking about. Mind you it's quite gross! They call it 'behror' which is incense but I think chewing a bit of incense would break your teeth so I'm not sure about that! The unwrapped ones look like your photo only duller. Just ask for Liben masri and see what you think! Let me know how long before you spit it out! |

OK - now I am confused!! (Nothing new there!)
Wiki hasn't helped me much either:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastic_%28plant_resin%29
If Mastic is Mastic and not Gum Arabic (but arabic gum) what does that make Liben Masri? |

| I think mastic is liben (gum), it looks the same in the wiki photo and interestingly it does say that mastic hardened can be used like frankincense so it is a sort of incense! |

Mystery solved.
Mastic it seems is also called ARABIC GUM. It comes from the sap of the Pistacia lentiscus.
GUM ARABIC on the other hand comes from Acacia trees.
I guess that's why it tastes so different and since Acacia are everywhere here it would be cheap to buy. The mastic comes from the Pistachio family and is expensive.
Gum Arabic is horrible and they use it sometimes in bokhour ( incense )but also chew it and it's used in flavourings and stuff. That's what your kids like Claire.
Mastic is nicer, chewy and mild in taste but very expensive. |
