Bugging Me

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

Was doing a walk about the garden and I have 4 main clumps of color in daisy like flowers

I quite like these clumps for the colour I'm getting but I have also noticed, especially in the evenings the bees that are buzzing around them or not.

I don't think I've ever seen a bee on the white ones (Here they are call Shasta Daisies but there is also another variety with probably double the petals that are called Shastas too) nor are there ever that many bees on the Blacked Eye'd Susans/Rudbekias (the bright yellow ones).

The bees however are all over the Echinachea and the Gallardia. Not sure if it is the colour they're attracted to or if these are giving off a scent or maybe there is just more pollen but the bees definitely prefer the orange & purple ones.

There was one bee out there whose legs were just loaded with pollen. He buzzed off so I couldn't get a good photo of him but he was totally loaded down.

Those are all lovely LLL. I have just started a new bed, that I hope will be a prairie style bed with lots of daisy types as well as the ubiquitous sunflowers & grasses (I had one very large bed in the UK & loved it, as it was very low maintenance once it was all in) This will be about 4M's square but have only just started planting after finally getting rid of most of the weeds! Lots of gaps but my son brought loads of seeds over for me, hopefully start some off in a nursery bed before we leave & the rest in April. I hope the sunflowers will help feed the birds whilst we are away.

This is summer #3 for me in this house so everything is just starting to fill in nicely now. I like the 'daisy' types as they're easy to grow, you get colour and they do tend to last a fairly long time.

I think ALL your respective gardening photos are lovely! Although I'm somewhat challenged in the 'gardener' respect, (plants take one look at me and shrivel up and die!) I love to see a beautiful garden and get quite envious of you all. :up
