Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
still no sign of any movement so in desperation for something to post, I have added a few pics to Horus's autumn colours thread.
The winter months are already becoming boring; but I can't sit and watch an Amaryllis bulb all day

Once they get going you can almost plant a ruler beside it and watch it grow every day. I swear some of mine have gained 1" per day once they kick into GROW mode (AND I might just do that for a week too - sink a ruler into the pot and take a daily photo to show the growth)

They certainly motor on once they start growing, in fact you need to try and avoid them becoming too leggy.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
I wish mine would start motoring on.
I have now put it in the airing cupboard, if it doesn't show signs of life it will end up in the garden waste bin.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
Grandad you are too impatient, just leave it in a sunny place where it is warm and it will grow. If you put it in the airing cupboard two things will happen, first you will 'force' the bulb (not good) second it will have white shoots with there being no sunlight and you will just shock it when you move it to a different temperature again. It will start to grow just be patient, its not a race

Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
Todays update:
The new bulb kit from Tesco is looking good, the early white coloured shoots it had when it was purchased have now started to turn green and have grown a little bit (maybe doubled in size) to about 1.3/8" long.
The one from Amazon (same as Grandad) is a lot slower and only just showing some green shoots although looking closely these leaves will be damaged at the top edge where it seems that this pair of leaves were probably nicked when the bulb was cut across by the grower, but some others may be seen starting to appear at the sides.
The 'Monster' is still going strong and has a good pair of outer leaves and another central leaf that are nice and green with a bit of dark shading that would denote a nicely growing (and not forced) leaves.
There are also clear signs of shoots on either side of the bulb which I am fairly sure are flower stems.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
Looking good H. Mine hasn't moved yet at all and still just seeing the very hairline tip of either a flower or leaf. Once it starts moving am sure it'll motor on fast

I haven't been able to get out for a while - but I shall have the last one in bloom perhaps?

Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
First time into town for a few weeks so I went into Tesco's and they had a whole rack of assorted Anaryllis. I got the Red Lion because I like red flowers as the strongest colour in the pallet. Just £5 fully potted with plstic liner and ceramic pot. Best deal of the day. Now to see if this one has any more life than the other that cost twice as much for just the bulb.
Fingers crossed

Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
Great stuff Grandad and you should see a few shoots protruding already, probably still pale from being in the dark. Take a look at my earlier post regarding the Tesco boxed bulb as they need firming down and the coir soaking properly.
Never mind MD, you will have a nice flower for early in the year
Just a thought, do you know anyone near you who has a Tesco delivery? maybe they could add one on their order for you.

Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
@Grandad - they sell Red Lion Amaryllis here and I've grown them over the years. They're a really robust flower with excellent colour. I debated getting another one for this year and didn't. I'm also debating picking up another Amaryllis but havn't come across any others yet. The original store only has a few left (they sell out fast) and the few that were left didn't look very appealing.
I might go back and see if any of the mini Amaryllis are still in the hardware store or I'll just have to see if any other stores have any anywhere. Wouldn't mind starting another one myself

Re: Amaryllis Challenge??
Yessssssss BUT they're GORGEOUS flowers!
This is my amaryllis from January 2016. I think (maybe) this was a Red Lion. I'm totally partial to them as they're absolutely fantastic.
