Potatoes!
DH does the shopping and potatoes are usually on the list, but the last lot he bought turned to slush when cooked - and, just to add insult to injury, he'd bought a sackful! However, such is my love of gadgets, that I thought to myself " Hang on! Didn't I buy a steamer a few years back?" Anyway, went rooting through the cupboards and found it (along with a few other new ones that have never seen the light of day since they were bought!). I was extremely sceptical that this steamer would work but to my delight, it worked perfectly! The potatoes stayed whole and were mashable! Any hints on using a steamer gratefully received, folks!

Re: Potatoes!
I can't comment on steamers RS but really like potatoes since you mentioned them. I like them because they can be prepared in so many different ways with the different varieties.
Mrs G is not a fan of the vegetable but my current fav for boiling is British Anya, those little sausage like tubers. Very tasty

Re: Potatoes!
I use a steamer all the time too specifically as H said for cauliflower, broccoli and carrots.
I don't like potatoes very much so I rarely eat them but I do know there are some varieties that do mush when cooked. If I eat potatoes at all I go for the small tiny thin skinned new potatoes (don't know the name).

Re: Potatoes!
I took my four part steamer to Egypt where it was and apparently still is used every day. I have only seen 3 part ones since, but I just love steamed veggies and rice, sometimes fish or fowl too.
Mashed potatoes are so easy, as you say Ruby and when you are feeding seven hungry people it becomes indispensable. We had a dish washer, but it's so easy to clean a steamer by hand that it was never put in with the rest of the pots and dishes.
I bought a small two person one for my daughter, which I'd quite like for myself.

Unfortunately, DH loves FOOD! It doesn't matter what it is - he's there! For him, potatoes in all their incarnations are edible, particularly chips!! Note to self: must remember to add some salt to the food when it's been steamed!

Re: Potatoes!
I gave up extra salt over 25 years ago, on medical advice only putting it in pasta water bye and large. Oh and baking of course especially cakes, just a pinch - but when food gets to my plate I never add salt. You get used to the difference in taste and now I find chips for example with salt on repulsive.

MD, I never put salt on my food because I don't like it, but food cooked without a little salt just tastes too bland.

And food must be seasoned for me but not overdone with the salt and pepper. Also fresh garlic is a must in most dishes.

Re: Potatoes!
I LOVE roast garlic. Not as much as my daughters as in their early teens they used to take fresh garlic to school with them and eat it on the way home!

Re: Potatoes!
Today is easy day in the kitchen for me. I have boned a leg of lamb, stuffed it with fresh sliced garlic and rosemary, so now I have a cheese sauce to make for cauliflower cheese. Teamed up with new potatoes and that will do. I'm a bit undecided whether to make a rhubarb or gooseberry crumble for dessert?

Alright for some! We haven't got crumble because GD descended on us - again! DH will have to make do with an apple and some chocolates out of the sweetie bowl!
