Land of the free

Post by Horus »

Just been watching the news and they were showing the American Super bowl with no other than Lady Gaga (who she?) singing the national anthem. Now I happen to think that the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ sounds quite nice and has some rousing sentiments, in particular the last line of “O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave”, but why on earth does it get mangled beyond recognition by these so called stars trying to outdo each other? Typically we have:
O’er the Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand of the Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and the Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooome of theeeeeeeheeeer, Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave.
All sung in a tremulous voice usually gasping for breath, it does my head in. :stp

It's called 'interpretation' H  I agree with you, it is an anthem and deserves to be sung with feeling but not screeching catawalling.

I do think we need a new anthem. Even Scotlands' 'Flower of Scotland' raises the emotions as at Murrayfield on Saturday but ours sounds uninspiring by comparison. I like South Africa's probably because I do know some of the words.

Dont remind me Grandad :stp
'Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika' or 'God Bless Africa' is actually used by quite a few African countries as their anthem. When my daighter was very small she went to school in Zambia and they would sing it every day in class, she loved to sing at home, so we used to get the Zambian version on a continual basis, it would drive us spare.

Did you know that the respectful term they would use to us would be 'Nkosi' for a man and 'Nkosi Khazi' for a female, I always used to tell Mrs H that the Khazi bit meant that they were calling her a toilet

Better Lady Gaga than the year one of the major Football games used Roseanne Barr (who was a comedienne in a half hour sitcom) but was NOT a singer nor even had a passable voice - was awful!

I spent my childhood singing "God Save the Queen" and then switched to "Oh Canada" but we've changed the words to it several times and I really don't know anymore exactly what it might be.
