My hobboy of watching News

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

Lately I do seem to have made watching IS a hobby and I see Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands are now joining in. Wonder at what time will this be considered a World War?
ua
Our TV news is definitely talking about Canada joining in. Our PM is indicating strongly that WE are going to do our part. We have 69 Special Ops soldiers there who are teaching and training however we do have fighter jets. Dunno if we're going to use them or if we're joining in. We're talking about it and we have received direct threats from IS.

IS is striking closer to home as there has been a beheading now of a woman in OK. Seems a recent convert to Islam was fired from a job, returned and attacked coworkers screaming Islamic phrases. He'd apparently been trying to convert coworkers to Islam. I see this particular case as more of a psychologically disturbed individual who copy catted, on his own, what is happening in the Middle East vs acting on order from a secret IS cell.

I do believe it is only a matter of time however until attacks on us start to happen as IMO there are cells here in the west just waiting to be mobilized. Maybe there isn't but I do believe there are.

On another note - I did directly ask the Saudi students I know "why" they are not speaking out against this and explained that as a person from the West I never hear any Islamic people speaking out against IS.

The Saudi students here are probably on average late 20ies to early 30ies. They're all here on scholarships to study, learn to speak English and most will move into the business world. They're thinking, aware young people. A few are married with spouses and children here but most are single. They're worlds away from the Corniche crew of Luxor.

When asked one student (who is Shia) said that he doesn't dare speak out given he is Shia and cited a history of Shia people disappearing, being victimized etc. He was directly fearful that if he became political at all his family would be 'at risk' of having members just disappear and referenced the disappearances involving torture. He talked to me the most, presented as very genuine in his concern and about the constraints re: talking about or making waves that have been put on Shia people.

Another student produced a photo of KluKluxKlan beside the Jihadists in black and elaborated if WE believe the KKK represents Christianity? So why do we believe IS represents IS? He had good points.

The others showed me on the Internet a very active Twitter campaign going on in Arabic speaking countries where lots of Arabic people have had their photos taken holding English signs saying "Not in My Name" meaning what IS is doing and saying is NOT what they are saying Islam is.

They did say their country does not support IS, it doesn't reflect what Islam is, they don't support it, feel IS needs to be stopped etc and also indicated and showed me online (in Arabic) a few Imams who are now speaking out against IS.

I find what they are telling you as being a little strange saying as it is the Saudi's that actively fund and promote this brand of Islam, in fact Saudi Arabia is the most radical Islamic country in the Middle East and most extremist groups have their origin in that country. :st

That was the explanations from 5 of 'em that I know and really the one fellow who is Shia spoke the most candidly of all. I do know the twitter/hashtag campaign is on and running and while it does show Muslims standing with a sign that says "notinmyname" it seems a relatively simplistic thing to do. Same way now when Movie Stars and important people "tweet" about a social issue. Tweeting seems to have become a way to say you've done 'something' but probably the absolute least amount possible and only sufficient to assuage your own conscience that you've done SOMETHING about the issue.

In the good old days if we had an opinion we wanted to share we had to write letters to newspapers, stand on street corners and really get ourselves out there but now we can feel we're part of a large movement by simply tweeting. This tweet also takes away your responsibility to do anything more.

As for me - Even myself I wonder as IS seemed to have derived from the Whahabi Salafists IN Saudi which are the super extreme and still ruling the roost there. I do kinda wonder if King Abdullah is going hands down to educate as many as he can so that they can have influence to one day remove the Whahabi or 'bearded ones' from the country? Dunno.

I also think that all the Saudi's here are only from the upper echelons of their society and so really not too aligned with the 'man on the street.' They're all great guys, friendly, chatty, interested in everything but ????

That is exactly the problem, hence my earlier comment.
