Good guess H - yes this is how popcorn used to be made. This was the start of 'disposables.' This came in a flat throw away aluminium pan + handle with folded aluminium over the popcorn. As the kernels started popping and expanding they push the foil up. Us kids used to stand around the stove watching mom shake the bejeebers out of the pan. Used to be fascinating watching that big silver bubble grow. Sometimes they burst and that was another level of excitement all in and out itself!

Haven't seen one of these myself for years......

Not really a UK thing LLL, the closest we got to Popcorn as kids was a packet of 'Butterkist' bought at the cinema, although now you can buy a similar thing in a paper packet that you have to microwave and I usually manage to set fire to mine
