Anti Morsi Protests

Post by Horus »

Anti Morsi Protests are taking place in reaction to giving himself dictatorial powers and saying no laws passed by him can be challenged, protests in Cairo, Suez & Alexandria claiming he is trying to be a new Pharoah, an accusation that was always levelled against Mubarak. There are of course some supporters, but at the moment the two groups are at different locations, so no conflict as yet.

Just saw a ticker line going across the TV here a little bit ago. Am sure there will be mega protests arising.

I'm not astute as to the intimate workings of the Egyptian military however I see them as being the only ones potentially able to challenge and uncrown, dethrone Morsi IF they can and the outcome of a military coup isn't necessarily for the best either.

I think you said it a long time ago H - "The devil you know......."

I can't quite remember - but - I think I read or heard somewhere that Morsi is now also attempting to control the internet. ???? Yes ???? No ???? I could be dreaming but somewhere I thought that Morsi was attempting to censor, control, limit the internet - which was how the Arab Spring started. After all if you can't talk you can't really organize to act. Can't be part of a flash mob if you're the only one to turn up.

It all points to a sad down turn, as I see it, to the lives of Egyptians. They could be a vibrant country but I think they're heading down the path to Afghanistan/Saudi where women's rights are obliterated and men have no option but to grow beards........

I fear that this is only the beginning, he will either have to back down pretty quickly and bluster his way out of this situation, or try and suppress the protests by being tough. He has already started on that second route by claiming that the protesters were not behind the revolution and the trouble was coming from supporters of the old regime. If he persists in that sort of tactic he will quickly marginalise each view into separate camps and open political division and that is not going to be good for Egypt. I can see these protests growing as each Friday passes and if he does foolishly call in the security forces to regain control in an attempt to avoid backing down, then I fear a huge backlash and a military coup hovering on the horizon.

Me too - am thinking along the same lines H.

What I'm finding a bit amazing is that Morsi is acting so quickly. He hasn't even been in office for a year and already he is making huge proclamations. Seems he is lacking even the common sense of being devious.

If I was him I'd, at least, bide my time, get myself positioned well, "appear" concerned about my people, allow tensions to simmer and lessen and concoct a seemingly plausible story that would minimally confuse my constituents prior to my proclaiming myself 'King Pharoh the Great' of Egypt.

What I can't get my brain around - there was an Arab Spring (Morsi had to be hiding in a cave not to know this), the people were reacting to a dictatorial regieme (Morsi had to know this), it was obvious throughout Tahrir Sq people the wanted democracy (Morsi had to know this) and there was a democratic election (Morsi MUST have known this) soooooooo knowing what he just had to know - WHY is he doing what he is doing now?

I believe he basically duped his entire country. Duped them with malice and forethought........gonna be lots of turmoil about his actions now. Too much loss of life, too many innocent victims in a population that was tired of repression and a dictatorial regieme.
