I have had this song running through my head all morning amd can't remember more than the beginning and end. It had a jaunty music hall sort of tune. I've looked on line and there are a huge number of versions. Anyone help me out with the middle?
My father used to sing this every Christmas, but heavily edited it. This was how it started-
It was Christmas day in the workhouse the whitewashed walls were black,
The painters would have painted them but they had got the sack.
and finished
We don't want your Christmas pud, you can put it up your jumper!
It was Christmas day in the workhouse.

Re: It was Christmas day in the workhouse.
Unfortunately the first two lines are
It was Christmas day in the workhouse the whitewashed walls were black,
The painters would have painted them but they had got the sack.
There's a jolly tune with it too.

Smile! It confuses people
