I would say fake. Based upon the height of the water on the wheels of the vehicle in the background it does not look deep enough. Also for water to do the disappearing down the plughole bit, it would require an open drain below the vortex. If such an open drain were there all the time it is unlikely that the surrounding water would be so high. It has all the appearances of someone just having removed a big bath plug.
I was going to go into my science mode by explaining the Coriolis force but as we don't know where the photo was taken I won't bother.

I had thought the same thing Andy but there is so much debate about the Coriolis force having no influence at all on the plug hole effect of water as its effect is so weak. Received wisdom now says it is all to do with the shape of the sink and many other things that influence the direction it will rotate, it can be made to go in either direction in both hemispheres. So that kicks our clever theories into touch thenandy wrote:I was going to go into my science mode by explaining the Coriolis force but as we don't know where the photo was taken I won't bother.

I decided there must be a large drain hole where the vortex was. I realise that in theory if there was a drain there the water shouldn't have built up in the first place, however, it's possible there was a blockage further down the pipeworks. If that had suddenly be removed it could creat a fast relief of the flooding and hence the vortex.
Like Horus and Andy I tried to examine the business of which way vortex spin depeninding on where you were located, but I'm not wise enuogh to know the name of the theory like they did - I must have been away from school that day.
I have been pondering the fact that the man seems to be standing towards or at the top of a hill, ie the houses in the background seem to be sloping away. That in itself may be an optical illusion!
Anyway, I still think it's a real photograph (even if I can't explain me reasons clearly).
Edit - I've just had another look. Perhaps the illusion is not the depth of the water at the point of the vortex. The man looks as though he is knee high water thus leading you to believe that that is the actual water level. Could it be that he is in fact standing in a hole himself thus giving a false perspecitve of the overall water level? [/face]

I recon its real he is probably suffering from that disease that makes hair grow all over the face. It also looks as though he combs some hair from his moustache up over his nose to emphasise the 'wolf man' effect. He also looks remarkable like my sons little Westie that we are looking after at the moment

[face=Comic Sans MS]Fake - As well as BB's explanation, I think that if the wind was that strong the blinds in the background would be 'ruffled' and the a board and cafe furniture likely to be knocked over. [/face]
