Father and Son

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

While reading an article last night about fathers and sons,
memories came flooding back to the time I took me son out for his first pint.
Off we went to our local pub only two blocks from our house.
I got him a Guinness. He didn't like it, so I drank it.
Then I got him a Kilkenny's; he didn't like that either, so I drank it.
Finally, I thought he might like some Harp Lager? He didn't.
So I drank it.
I thought maybe he'd like whiskey better than beer,
so we tried a Jameson's; nope!
In desperation, I had him try that rare Redbreast,
Ireland's finest.
He wouldn't even smell it.
What could I do but drink it!
By the time I realized he just didn't like to drink,
I was so ****-faced,
I could hardly push his stroller back home.

I can say that I took my son out for his first pint at 17 years old, I impressed upon him the respect he should have for all the people he was drinking with, the Landlord for his authority, the old guy in the corner reminiscing about the war, the bigot espousing his views and the intellectual talking some sense. I told him that as long as he came out with me that he was in a mans world and he should behave like a man, he should hold his ale and say when he had drunk enough, he should listen to what was being said and realise that some of it was truth and some of it was the alcohol talking. That only a fool and an idiot could not hold his drink and became violent and there was nothing macho about behaving in such a manner and he would only look like a fool. To this day I can honestly say that my son has never disgraced me in a public bar and I really believe that part of any young mans right of passage is to be taken out for a pint with his dad. 8)

Definitely wish many more fathers imparted that wisdom to their sons.
