Medical Results

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

Came down to the States for a Bone Density test to see how my bones are doing. Just got the results and DAMN! My spine is normal but my hip has a low bone mass which translates to a 15.1% probability that I will suffer a major hip break in the next 10 years.

Apparently, in my hip, I have Osteopenia which is the stage before osteoporosis. Darn it all........so I guess I'll start walking LOTS and doing some weight bearing exercises plus start taking calcium. I think there is 'some' calcium in my daily vitamin but I'm not too sure how much.

Guess I'll have to do some reading up on this and make some changes and I guess better known than not. Wonder if this is why my right hip has been aching lots lately?

Sorry to hear that LLL, but at least forewarned is forearmed and you can start trying to strengthen your hips.

Do you have a pedometer or similar for measuring your daily steps? I got one several years ago and was shocked to find I had only done about 4000 steps the first day! Gradually built up & now rarely do less than 10,000. Having said that, despite doing a lot of gardening this morning I am well short so we will go for a walk after dinner when it cools off a bit!

I do have a FitBit that measures steps but the one I have won't do water so it just became too much of a pain taking on/taking off. It finally got taken off and put somewhere around here - will have to find it. Been thinking on the way home I'll have to start making more of a point of going for a decent walk daily.

I also need to figure out what is an easily absorbed calcium. I'm already taking Vitamin D as I'm almost always depleted but will have to read up and figure out what is the best calcium to take that is easily absorbable. I haven't yet checked out my multivitamin calcium amount but the recommendation that came from the Doctors office was 2000 Units of Vitamin D per day along with 1500 (whatever the units are) of calcium.

Will get another Bone Density in 2 years time to see if I'm holding it or if I'm losing.
