RCMP Alert

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

We have a neighbourhood watch FORUM on Facebook that is just for our neighbourhood. We can post alerts (i.e. stolen bikes, weird people walking around looking at houses, cars being rifled through etc). Sadly more and more of late it is becoming increasingly active as socially we go down and the CREEPS come out.

About 8 houses down the street from me last night a neighbor had to call the RCMP as she heard unusual noises in her back yard and thought somebody was in her backyard possibly trying to break into her shed or ?

RCMP arrived quickly and flashlights in hand went into her backyard to find a huge fully grown BEAVER back there!! It wasn't a happy camper and rushed them but nimbly they were able to get out of its way. This rush got it out of her backyard and down the street!

She posted pictures of it in our FB group and it was a big one and more than likely from the marsh out behind my house. One of her neighbours works for the local TV station and asked, on FB, if they could get her pictures so hopefully will be able to show you the size of this guy later!

At least she wasn't being broken into and/or it wasn't a cougar or bear!

This Beaver incident has turned into a HUGE event. It was on the Last Night Late TV News for the entire Province and now the RCMP have put out an official MEMO entitled "A Classic Canadian Encounter)!!

A classic Canadian encounter
Nanaimo

File # 2018-13438

Nanaimo RCMP officers responded in force the other night to a report of a possible break and enter in progress. What they found was not quite what they expected. The panicked 911 call came in at approximately 10:30 pm on Wednesday April 18th from a resident on Sun Valley Drive.

When officers arrived they immediately set up containment and approached with the scene with trepidation, not knowing what they may be walking into. Using skills acquired and honed over the years they were physically and mentally prepared to accept the challenge head on. With flashlights in hand the source was identified. Come out with your hands up, don't make any quick movements, said the attending officer. Slowly and deliberately the suspect availed themselves to the officers and with paws and tail in the air; a full grown beaver waddled out and into the open!

The officers tried asking the beaver for some identification but with a shake of its tail, it simply meandered through the yard and was last seen heading southbound, in search of more beaver friendly hangouts. The officers reassured the panicked caller that the situation had been resolved and when she was told it was a beaver, they all shared a good laugh and chalked it up to just another day in Nanaimo.

This beaver really did a number on this ladies fence post. I'm lots closer to the swamp than she is and I've also got cedar fence posts so am hoping it doesn't amble up and starting eating its way into my own backyard.

You know - nothing much exciting ever really happens here on the Island so when something like a beaver in the back yard does happen it becomes the never ending saga:
