WOW - my amaryllis is still sitting as dormant as door knob. Hopefully it'll decide to move soon.

I was at the store I bought it from and looked and mine has come from Holland too.

I shall give mine a good talking to today. No sign of any movement but it has only been about 40 hours since I potted it. Perhaps I am expecting miracles. ;)

You only put the squiggly bits to the bottom if you're in Australia planting Australian style.

And, don't forget, as this is a seasonal planting to add the appropriate spices and seasonings too :)

On close and I do mean CLOSE examination today I can see just the faintest hair of the starting of a bud coming up. Still white as not even high enough to get any chlorophyll going yet but now that there is just the faintest start by this time next week I should be able to get a photo of "The Beginning"

You are not thinking of buying a fully grown one in a pot are you Grandad?
Seriously though, it may take another week or so before you see any signs, but keep it sunny and quite warm if you can ;)

Now for a gloat :D

This is the samll one and it is just starting to show a green leaf shoot

This is 'The Monster' and it already has a couple of leaves about 2" (50mm) long with two more side shoots starting to appear.

Horus wrote:Well how about this then? today I decided to pop down the local garden centre and pick up some potting compost. I decided to give it a try with ‘cactus’ based medium mainly because I reckon that the Amaryllis will do well in a gritty type of soil whereas my garden soil is very peaty. So there I was with my bag of compost when suddenly …………………. I espy the biggest Amaryllis bulb I have ever seen, so I bought it. It is about 120mm in diameter (about 4-3/4”) and 1.5 lbs in weight, if it flowers then I won’t need a Christmas tree. I still have the one ordered from Amazon to arrive yet so this year I will be entering two bulbs, it will be interesting to compare them both.

This is it next to a CD! :o

As I'm sitting on the side-lines here I was having a close look at the bulbs from you early starters.

Actually this gorgeous bulb of Horus's is showing a green point in the photo (had to enlarge it as hadn't got my right glasses on) I didn't notice that at first but it made me think that if and when I get the chance to choose mine I will look for the opposite of choosing onions for keeping ie narrow neck and whiskery roots denote dormancy. I'll look for heavy thick necked bulbs that haven't been cut back too close to the neck.

I live in hope.

Here is the good news :up Tesco have got their Amaryllis bulb pack in the stores and they look good value at only £5 for the complete kit. I chose a White variety this time as the other two I have are red in some way so this should make a nice change.
8610

When you take it out of the box the bulb seems to be quite a good size and is already potted in a coir like growing medium and the hint of a leaf.
8609

This to me looked a bit on the loose side and I am sure would not have supported the bulb very well, so I packed it down around the edges which of course means it looks as if it needs another bit more coir adding to raise the level up by about another 1/2" or so. I will maybe add a bit of my Cactus compound later if I think it needs it, although I did want this to be a test of the Tesco kit on its own without any help from me.
8608

It has a very nice ceramic pot to go with it that should compliment the white flowers
8607

Here it is with the other bulbs already to go :up although I did notice that the Coir fibre was extremely dry and it will need a few days to get it properly damp without making it soggy. So I flooded the top and left it to soak in over an hour or so, then I will add the equivalent of a couple of egg cup fulls for the next couple of days, then just enough water to keep it moist after that.

Whoopie! Thank you Horus!

Mine all came from Tesco last year and I did have trouble with my first one which grew very tall and had a huge head of flowers. I eventually put it in a waste paper basket to stop it falling over.

Yes MD they can get a bit on the tall side that is why I was not overly happy about how loosely it was packed in the pot, I also think you have to watch the light level and try not to draw them with the light.

Grandad can you not get a relative or friendly neighbour to pick you one up?
I was going to say it's best to leave your scooter purchase until after the Winter, but I forgot that you Southerners don't get any real snow anyway ;)

@Horus - Do you happen to know the name of the white one? Am rather surprised you got one (not that you bought it but that you FOUND a white one). I was fairly sure there were white amaryllis but I've not see one here for sale. Reds, pinks, pink stripes and this year the white and red but haven't seen whites. When we get amaryllis in we also get "Paperwhites" too at the same time. Don't like them as they always end up toppling over but they do arrive same time as the amaryllis.
