Wild Alaska Live

Post by Grandad »

This is a series of just three programs on BBC 1 about the wildlife of Alaska during the salmon run. I missed the first episode on Sunday but saw last nights and hope to catch this Sunday nights final episode. The series are broadcast live to the UK and with manned and remote cameras, record the behavior of brown and black bears, wolves, bald eagles and Orcas during the period when the salmon swim upstream to spawn.
There is some superb photography and compelling to watch scenes of brown bears with cubs catching the salmon and teaching the cubs. We have many wildlife programs which can get a bit repetitive but, being live, this is rather different. I am thinking of LLL because this is more in her area of North America and hopefully LLL, you will get to see the series sometime.
Has anyone else been watching? It is broadcast at 8pm on BBC1

Fantastic pictures in last evenings episode. Most amazing to me was a pod of 9 to 11 hump back whales that 'Bubble Netted' herring. They would find a shoal, form a circle and dive deep then as they rose one or two whales would blow bubbles to comcentrate the herring so that when the whales reached to surface they could gorge on great mouths full.
Very clever.

I find whales generally to be super interesting. They live forever and to think a whale could have been BORN in 1917 and still swimming today. Their size is also impressive. Impressive on TV but here I've seen only Killer Whales (and I know they're not real whales) and they are HUGE!

I can also attest having been 'up there' in the wilderness of the North that none of us living here appreciate the vast expanses and what a TOTAL WILDERNESS is really like. We're dividing land up into little parcels and calling it home - up there land can be divided into MILES and you're not touching it all.
