An old fashioned lunch?
I have just had a thick slice of homemade whole meal bread toasted, topped with fried soft roe with black pepper and vinegar! Delicious! Soft (and hard) roe was part of a staple diet when I was a child but it's hard to come by these days! Progress - or fussiness?

Sounds very tasty, but I can't remember the last time I had Roe. I suppose like lots of things we used to enjoy they have either fallen out of favour or are just no longer available because of modern processing methods.

Re: An old fashioned lunch?
Sounds good to me RS But as I have said before, I like anything that comes out of the sea
I think wet fish is much less part of our diet these days. We DO buy fresh fish, herrings, trout, mackeral, sea bass; but as a youngster, wet fish was cheap and eaten at least once a week. You got used to finding hard and soft roe in those days. We even had the fish man who came around the streets a couple of times a week.
These days if people even buy fresh fish, it is usually filleted so no roes and no bones to contend with.
But next time you have toasted wholemeal with fried roe RS, I shall be waiting for my invite

Definitely ME TOO! I love all things seafood and your lunch surely sounded delicious I'll arrive with Grandad
By 'wet fish' you mean - Fresh fish?
And - I'm not getting a distinction of soft of hard roe?

Yes LLL, wet fish is fresh untreated as in smoked. The fresh fish shops were always called 'Wet Fish' shops.LovelyLadyLux wrote: By 'wet fish' you mean - Fresh fish?

Hard roe is the eggs of a female fish in a membrane sac. Soft roe is the 'milt' of a male fish, containing the sperm to fertilise the female's eggs. I am guessing there is a lot of protein in both.
I mentioned fresh herring and as a kid you could tell the sex of the fish by its roe.

I am struggling to resist decribing what RS has actually had on her toast.

By everyone's comment on "roe" I'd rather not see it or taste/eat it the whole meal bread toasted ...yes

Re: An old fashioned lunch?
One of my favourite treats - well seasoned soft roe gently poached in butter which is then heaped on wholesale toast or creamy mashed potatoes - the browned butter being poured over all. No vinegar for me.
Some people egg and breadcrumb, so there is a crunchy outer, I don't care either way, delicious.

Smile! It confuses people

I love fish eggs on sushi. I love to hear the pop of the eggs when I crunch down on them. Love the flavor, love the texture - love it all!
Never heard the term 'wet' fish here. Here fish are fish and smoked fish are smoked

Another treat for me - when I can get hold of them - is sweetbreads! Sautéed in butter until they are nutty brown! I love them!

Thank goodness for that Grandad but the alternative sounds just as bad, according to Wikki:
But joking apart I cannot say I have ever tried any, not with my knowledge at least
Yuk!throat, gullet, or neck sweetbread) or the pancreas (also called heart, stomach, or belly sweetbread),

I don't think I've ever had them myself so can't really say if I'd like them or not. I do love Tongue but I realize that isn't a sweet meat.

I buy Tongue most weeks for sandwiches, but not had Brawn for years. I always disliked the little boney bits you used to get in it when I was a kid.

Some of these post have made me think of vomiting . . LLL crunching and RS with her roe - - we have a fish van twice a week, and believe me, all the roe goes to my cats - -
