Spring Equinox and Daylight Saving Time
A bit pointless because it happens every year but as the days are getting longer I was interested to check when the Spring Equinox occurs. For my home town it is March 17 when sunrise and sunset are at the same time, 06.04 and 18.04. These times will vary slightly wherever you live but I believe in the UK the 20 March will be the official equinox.
This lead me to another annual spring event, Daylight Saving Time when we put the clocks forward. I still don't see why this is necessary because there are still the same number of daylight hours no matter how you set your clocks so why not adjust your working pattern if that suits? In the UK this will take place on 27 March and for some reason the USA and Canada advance their clocks forward one hour two weeks earlier on 13 March. Islamic countries may change their timings depending on when Ramadan occurs.
Crazy, just leave them all alone, it is bad enough that some countries like India who have a half hour time difference, i.e. 5 1/2 hours ahead of UK time, that must be a headache for aviators flying through different time zones.

Re: Spring Equinox and Daylight Saving Time
We "spring" ahead this weekend Silly IMO as the days are getting longer naturally so just leave it. I do admit I used to like the "fall" back giving an extra hour of sleep time but not really as I could have easily gone to bed an hour earlier and acquired the extra hour of sleep that way.
I'd vote for just leaving the time alone.

Re: Spring Equinox and Daylight Saving Time
It annoys me that we have to keep messing with the UK time mainly to suit farmers living in the North of Scotland, as you say Grandad just adjust your own working day to suit how much daylight you require. In today's global environment where we trade and buy, sell and communicate in all various time zones it does seem pointless.

Yes Kiya that has always been one of the justifications inasmuch as Farmers in the North of Scotland would be working in the dark if we didn't adjust the clocks.

I agree, but the real solution is simply "get up earlier"

I will be very happy when you move your hour again as my teletext is an hour out, very annoying when you only glance .. and then find out you have missed the programme. I thought they changed the hour so schoolkids didnt get splatted going home in the dark !

Ah that's the only reason I know of .....that children would go to school in daylight & home in daylight

Re: Spring Equinox and Daylight Saving Time
Here we were always told it was cause the Farmers needed to get up earlier to do their work in daylight.
