Re: What are you doing today?
I am just getting back in my stride after a short break and finding lots to do. I have just put on a nice beef stew in my slow cooker for tomorrows dinner and later will make some dumplings to go with it, I have also cooked a small pork joint which I will use for making some sandwiches later today as I don’t fancy cooking a main meal, mind you the crackling is already taking a battering and is going fast.
I popped into the bank this morning and was told they were doing a cake and coffee afternoon tomorrow to raise money for the Douglas McMillan Cancer Care charity as one of my ladies in the bank lost her mum to this awful disease last year. My dear late wife was also a big supporter of this particular charity and I do my best to support it on her behalf. It appears that the bank will match any amount raised, so I am about to get stuck in and bake a couple of cakes for them, I just wish I had known sooner than today, but hey ho it will keep me busy. I have decided to make them a ‘Fiery Ginger Cake’ and a ‘Date and Walnut Cake’ so I have just checked and I have all of the ingredients I need in stock other than the crystalized ginger, stoned dates and Walnuts which I picked up while out shopping today, busy, busy.
Here is an early morning picture of the river Conway in Wales where I used to take Annie for her morning stroll when on our break.

I'm no where hiding Horus, although not much to say & not been out & about taking photos I am always in the back ground watching you allHorus wrote:Thanks Kiya, yes I will post some pictures once I get myself sorted out, couldn’t believe how much washing I brought back, I did three loads after I got back yesterday. And where have you been hiding yourself lately? We don’t hear so much from you nowadays, how is Roy doing is he still in Canada?
Grandad it is always sad when we have to give up something we enjoy doing or makes our lives easier, but life is all about change and sometimes we just have to accept it, in reality it will just mean that you will be doing things differently.
Roy is still in Canada & enjoying his work, don't know yet if he'll be home Nov/Dec or staying another year. Was always hoping to get a holiday to see him but, hey ho it might come yet

Re: What are you doing today?
Well, hopefully I will be quite a bit richer by the end of the day. My son is confident that the man and his wife from Birmingham WILL turn up and buy my car. If they are prepared to travel nearly 200 miles by train, they must be genuine. Next stop the mobility scooter shop But if I get one it will only get limited use so I shall find a decent used one. As long as it has new batteries it should be OK. Got to be an 8mph job though

Don't be like the old guy I see in Tesco Grandad, he has a huge mobility scooter with a full rain canopy and drives it up and down the aisles with total disregard for everyone else, he may as well be driving a delivery van

Re: What are you doing today?
We have LOTS of mobility scooters driving about here. They're common and far as I can tell quite a reliable way for Seniors to be getting around.
HERE nothing is close to anything else so if walking is difficult you MUST have another way of getting around.
I see lots of them fulled decked out for snow & rain. I even see Seniors walking their dogs by the side of the scooter. This always looks cute with the pup or dog trotting along side OR being pulled in a small cart attached to the back OR riding on the lap of the driver.
IMO these scooters are terrific and keep everybody mobile with an ability to get out and about.
Our grocery stores have electric shopping wheelchairs for people to use. You only have to be able to get out of your scooter and into an electric chair to be able to shop.
Most of our larger grocery stores offer shoppers who will shop the store for you so all you have to do is call in your order then show up to pick it up.

Re: What are you doing today?
My beloved little Toyota has moved to Birmingham today so there is no chance of me seeing it on the road locally.
It was bought by an Asian couple who run a Korean/Japanese restaurant in B'ham. The lady normally their child to school in one of their two large Audis but the fuel cost is £200 a week, she has a two hour run each way, and the smaller car will reduce the cost and, as an automatic, make the journey less stressful.
My sone did the deal for me but it showed how indispensable the internet can be. She had already got an insurance quote in advance. After seeing the car they confirmed the insurance to get a policy number. They then taxed the car (£20) which although the car was taxed, it is not transferable. Then the money was transferred to my sons account and after they left, he transferred it to me.
All done online on a Sunday afternoon. How did we used to manage?

@Grandad - "WOW" that sure sounds like it was pretty straight forward and simple. Hard to beat the 'all online' way of life now.

@Grandad - That is pretty impressive wheelin' and dealin'! Sounds like an excellent outcome and there is no way it would happen prior to Internet.

Re: Mobility Scooters. Make sure that you have a place to keep it with comfortable access and egress before you decide on the model. I didn't.
I would suggest buying a cheap one on Gumtree for example. Try it out, if it suits you sell it and buy a new model, obviously if it doesn't suit you, you know why and try another if necessary before investing in a new one. I am seriously considering selling mine and buying a smaller one. I still haven't been out on mine and I've had it for more than 6 months!
I fell in love with the pictures and videos of the Quingo. It was advertised on Gumtree at a quarter of the purchase price in immaculate condition. I tried it out in a car park and bought it on the spot. It had 17 genuine minutes of battery use and there were threads of rubber on the tyres still as it had hardly been used.
The previous owner had received it as a surprise present from her son - but felt intimidated by it. I thought it was wonderful -l forgetting that I no longer live on a farm with plenty of space, but instead live in a Victorian end of terrace in the city.
Access through the front gateway needs muscle power or a very small ramp from the narrow pavement ( which can't be permanent in case a member of the public falls over it.) The next thing was a ramp into the house. While I was saving up the nearly £300 for a factory made one customised to our odd dimensions a lovely local carpenter made a wooden one, split in two so that I can move it as it's very heavy - for £30! Bless him.
However we have no access to the back garden as the new development behind the house has put a fence across our garden gate. ( Ongoing dispute. ) The hall is quite long, but has a "dog leg" kink in it half way down and the scooter just can't quite get round it. So it is parked in the hall. All the time. We can squeeze past it, but not with a tray in hand.
The friendly carpenter tried different ways of getting it in and out, basically is has to be reversed in, with about 2 inches of space either side through the doorway. OK no problem. though it was immaculate until the carpenter tried it out, now it ha a hefty scrape on one wing, but the time I'm proficient it will have a lot more I think, as my muscle problem is bothering me at the moment and I've not got the strength to use it.

Re: What are you doing today?
What have I been doing today? Counting my new found wealth of course. Now one, two, three, four, five, drat don't interrupt me, now, where was I, one, two, three..............
@Mad Dilys As for scooters MD I don't have a problem of access as can be seen here.
The machine would have its own garage with flat access and charging power point. I don't want one of those monsters but as I weigh around 17 stone my minimum spec is 8mph, range from about 20 miles, good ground clearance, and at least a 500 watt motor, fairly large wheels and spring suspension. For claimed mileage, I just halve that because it is always over stated.
This is the sort of thing I am looking at, not necesserilly this one but this size etc.

Re: What are you doing today?
Am off to JURY DUTY today
Was "summoned" a couple weeks ago for FIVE days
Maybe I won't be selected as this week is supposed to be the BEST weather of FALL (before the rains start).
As to mobility scooters - great advice MD. I hadn't actually ever really thought about all of what you mentioned. I see lots of people here using them - outside on the streets - but I hadn't ever really thought too much about how they work inside and in all honestly I hadn't even quite considered they would be inside.
When I bought this house and I intend to die in it I wanted an open and flat area with no steps up to the entrance. It has the great room idea for most of the house although to get down to the bedroom I do have to go down a hallway BUT I could move into the second largest bedroom which is essentially off the living room (kinda). Been eyeballing the space and room around here since reading your post and I'm not sure I'd be able to get a scooter around to the kitchen sink OR over to the fridge and most importantly INTO the bathroom!
All good points to think about as whilst I wanted FLAT (from outside to inside) and FLAT about the house where I could easily live I never really contemplated a mobility scooter.
I do believe these are the best thing since sliced bread to keep people going and having an ability to get OUT of their homes.

Re: What are you doing today?
Looks the job Grandad but having had experience of my mothers powered wheelchair your point about distance and range is well worth noting as so many things can affect it, inclines, speed, passenger weight, continuity of use etc. all these things help to bring it down. My advice would be to select your favourite destination and set off on a return trip, but have someone on the end of a mobile phone or checking your progress in a escorting car just in case you dont make it. If all is well, then add a few more local short trips to see what the actual range is likely to be before a flat battery ensues, that old railway line alongside your home looks like a good place for a test run.

Re: What are you doing today?
My Jury Duty was rather anti climactic in that after all 60 of us amassed in the Court room the accused changed his mind and pleaded 'guilty' last minute. Judge dismissed us all so was only out 45 minutes in the court room total.
