What a welcome home

Post by Grandad »

The victorious All Blacks arrived back in Aukland today after their fantastic Rugby World Cup win. They were greeted by airport ground staff doing The Haka which I found very amusing and equally poignant, heartfelt, and patriotic.

I agree Grandad, problem is if did something similar here we would have every other ethinic and nationalistic group complaining it offended them in some way. 8)

Agreed H. There are lots of maori looking faces among those guys. If we assembled a random bunch at any major airport it would be hard to find any indigenous faces. ;)

I've gone to lots of events in Hawaii where all sorts of different Polynesian dances are done and they're usually identified by country or island of origin. Dancers are always in national dress and the dances are quite elaborate.

Never thought about these dances being protested but I can/could see it happening which is rather kinda sad but, as you say, I'm more then positive that somebody would be offended.

We often get First Nations groups in traditional clothing performing dances here and NOBODY would DARE to indicate here they were offended! GEEZ - fast track yourself to jail and lawsuits :o :o

I know Scotland has national clothing and dances - but does England or Wales?

:))) :)))

It actually just came to me that I don't know what a person from England wears to denote national costume or traditional dress.

The Scottish have traditional clothing down to a fine art and even the Irish seem to have a corner on traditional clothing but I drew a complete blank on England.

No traditional clothing at all?

The Welsh definitely have a national costume- well, the women do.

@Ruby Slippers - my grandmother on my dad's side was from Wales (Ponti Poole). Right now one of my same age girl cousins has gotten into Ancestry and is quite actively tracing her (the Clarksons).

I never knew or even thought much about people from Wales having a national costume so I Googled it.

Really the HATS? That bring Abe Lincoln to mind!!! Wonder how they managed to make them stand up like that way back when? And I equally wonder the purpose way way way back when of wearing such a high hat? I get the brim with all the wet weather but such a high hat? (Seems kinda improbable to me going on the theory that national dress evolved from practical commonly worn clothing way back in the history of the country)

The Welsh are not very big people, so maybe it was to make them look taller?

I honestly shouldn't laugh, being half Welsh. And it is true that most Welsh people of yesteryear were tiny. I'm living proof.

Maybe the tall hats were to make them look taller but it definitely made them look, at a minimum, cute! :D

I'm not sure at all how tall my Grannie from Wales was either.
