My David Roberts Prints

Post by Horus »

As promised earlier I have spent all day taking photographs of my David Roberts prints that I bought in Cairo a few years ago as they are too big for a scanner. Each one is pretty well as it appears on the print and I have also photographed the text that is on the back as it would have taken me too long to type it all out, but that makes the reading a bit more interesting as it contains many little Egyptian to English translations that come out rather amusing, so I have left them in. (note the Beatles on the portico, or should that be Beetles?) The information is generally quite good and often gives some nice little observations made by earlier travellers that are interesting to compare with a modern photograph where many of the things shown in these paintings are now missing or restored in some way. Due to the paintings being slightly different sizes I have struggled to keep them uniform due to forum upload restrictions, so best to view them large and to expand any that have the cross arrows on them, anyway I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I do. :)

Thank you for sharing Horus :) these are fantastic :) I really like the Abu Simble Temple ones, The Temple of Isis & the Luxor View, colour makes a whole of difference I think & makes one think of how they would have looked once upon a time.
I remember so well walking into Abu Simble & looking at the height of the statues, sooooo amazing!

The printed info is taking a bit of time to maximise for me to read but I think its just my computer :(

Do you have them framed & hanging.........I would they're beautiful :)

Glad that you liked them Kiya, I agree with you that Abu Simbel is magnificent when you stand and look up at those statues. I have visited every place that is listed here and have many modern photographs of each site, so it is nice to look at them and compare with the David Roberts sketches of how they have all changed. I do not have them all framed as they are quite big and I would need a gallery to display them in. so I keep them in a large folder that they came in and take them out for a view now and again.

How big is each print?
They are all A2 size, which is 23.4 inches by 16.5 inches or 594 mm x 420 mm if talking metric, which is a nice picture size for framing :up

Yessss that is a lovely size. Do you actually have all the photos hanging and on-display? They're lovely in that they are all 'themed' in similar colours and concept. Depending on the wall you have to hang them they'd definitely be impressive.

Just finished reading the last print. For some reason my laptop wasn't opening all the writings and was hanging up selectively on them. "CYBER world"..........

Who wrote the write ups H? Do you know? The artist? or were the writings add by another?

I think they were written by an Egyptian judging by some of the words, but I reckon they were using bits from other peoples accounts and descriptions such as Belzoni, Willkinson and Roberts himself.

You are right there Jay, especially when you think that Belzoni had to dig through that huge sand dune that at the time was even bigger than in this painting and it kept filling in again as he was digging. :o

Horus, did you see the TV re-enactment of Belzoni's discovery? Belzoni was played by Matthew Kelly and he was diabolical in the part! I fell about laughing!

And just so you can have another laugh .................... here's Matthew with the bushy beard as Belzoni

Sarah was pretty nimble running up the dunes. Pretty brave exposing all her skin to the Egyptian sun too.......if that was me I'd be sweating like a horse running up the dunes and I'd also be fried and red like a lobster from the sun.....Hope she was wearing sunscreen! :)))

Me thinks so.........'course I've always been like a 'delicate flower'   Am sure she was pretty rough and rugged......

In Luxor have you ever noticed the size of the average persons hands there? Most show a life of pretty tough work and tell alot about the society. Hands here rarely look, on average, like there.
