Hi, I have recently moved to Egypt with work and am living in 10th of Ramadam City. I expect to be here at least 12 months - possibly longer.
I would like to learn to learn to speak Arabic. Can any one recommend anywhere around here that teaches to foreigners?
10th Of Ramadan is way across town from me so I don't know sorry.
What you need to do is learn Egyptian colloqial Arabic and not 'standard' for every day conversation.
You might find the local universities run courses.
What you can do in the meantime is teach yourself.
Get hold of Pimsleur Egyptian Colloqial Arabic lesson CD's. They are the best.
or
If you can get to the AUC bookshop you can buy 2 good books.
Sabah al kheir ya Misr parts 1&2 by Hassan and Wilmson.
They are AUC Press.
Then spend one week learning the alphabet. In a week you should be able to know each sound and letter and all it's forms.
Then spend another week looking at English words and imagine it in Arabic letters. It's won't make sense but it is just to practice. Write your name in Arabic, stuff like that.
Then start on the books. They are really short and easy lessons.
Thanks for that. I've been using "Arabic for Dummies" up to now. It is difficult learning a language by yourself, it is easier with verbal interaction.
