Just came across this article and found it interesting. It is NEW to me but might be old news to everybody else. Thought I'd share.

Re: Discovery
New to me too, It may be obvious, but it hasn't occurred to me before. This city is underwater presumably because of earthquakes, but has the site sunk, or is the water level risen? I'm not aware of the depth of water at the site, but I know the Mediterranean deepened long before the statues were made.

Re: Discovery
I think this is old hat inasmuch as it is the site of the palace of Cleopatra and of the famous Pharos lighthouse, once one of the seven wonders of the world. The Pharos and the palace were believed to have been destroyed during an earthquake that toppled the lighthouse and sunk the land on which the palace stood. Interestingly the base building of the Pharos lighthouse is where Caesar once defended himself with only a few troops when they were attacked whilst in staying in Egypt, I believe that some of the lighthouse base is still visible if you know what you are looking at.

I just found it interesting as I hadn't heard of it before but MD good question - did the land sink or the water rise?

What would I do without Google? I think this article answers my questions elegantly and inspires me to find out more.
