Welcome to my backyard patio oasis ;-)

Post by Grandad »

I did say I would post a few pics of my little backyard oasis in a few weeks BUT; as it is mid summers day on Friday, we may not get too many more days when the sun shows its face.
So here are just a few snaps this afternoon to show you where we spend time in the sun, when it shines that is
;)

HEY - that looks super duper lovely! It really is an oasis. You've got a really good mix of different plant heights and colour combos and patterns there. The re-potted palm looks really good too. I like the contrast of the white rocks. All is looking very comfy out there.

You've definitely got a really nice looking good neighbours fence too. Wish I had the same (chain link on the one side growing ivy and virginia creeper) and only 4' high on the other side. WHY they didn't put a 6' fence is beyond me. Doesn't bother me too overly much but still it would be better with a higher fence.

And your actually patio looks much better with all the spaces between the blocks solid. I remember you showing pictures from way be when before you did it and this looks much better now. Definitely give it more of a patio feel.

That was my wifes idea LLL. I had to agree that the large grey pot was not very attractive but I think the palm looks happy in it.
Although a small backyard, we can accommodate quite a few members of the family if a gang arrives ;) For us it is a very comfortable and quiet space where we can 'catch some rays', birdwatch and just relax :up

What I've done around the bottom of some of my plants is to buy low spreading flowery grown cover plants (i.e. phlox) and plant them around the base of some of my plants. Some of the low spreading sedums do well for this too as they fill in the pots and take the raw dirt look off.

I started putting oyster shells around a couple of the hostas but then I thought that might leach too much calcium so I ended up just tossing the shells here and there about the garden. I don't really have a way to crush them up but if I could I'd gather a few more to add to the garden although clam shells pulverize up a bit easier.

Very hot in the sun today so this pm it was a case of up with the parasol and out with my bird watching perch (that's my comfortable lounger  ) Not much activity going on but I persevered and did get a few pictures to post. There are 7 so I had to carry over due to the 'Drag and Drop' limit of 5 pictures:-

A female house sparrow at an open seed tray

A newly fledged robin chick just starting his first moult

A hen blackbird cooling off

Just to complete my earlier post, the squirrels became very active and found the seed tray

First there was one

Then there were two, dropping seed onto the bank
P1010864.JPG
And there were three more feeding on the dropped seed, picking out the sunflower seeds

I put food out for the foxes but dinner was ready so I had to leave them to enjoy their supper ;) :) :)

Lovely photos. I'm hoping the albino squirrels will return but your grey squirrels are more than photogenic anyway. They're fun to watch.

@Grandad - Not too sure how your tomatoes are doing but "Ta Dah"!!! Today I found the first bract (Sweet 100) of little tomatoes so, at least, I won't be skunk'd crop-wise ;)

The nasturtiums have also definitely kicked into high gear of growing

Can't let you have all your own way with the Nasturtiums LLL ;)
We have had some incredibly hot weather these last few days so mine are suffering from the heat, but this is the corner clump comming along nicely :up

@LovelyLadyLux
OMG, LLL. Your toms are way ahead of mine but as I have said before (as an excuse really ;) ) I was late sowing the seeds.
But all my plants do now have at least one flower head. I trimmed a few lower leaves off this morning on the basis that I want to encourage all the energy to go to the top of the plants.

Now then you two, H and LLL. Stop boasting about your nasturtiums, you know I don't have any :xx I do think they are very good for ground cover though with the mixture of large green leaves and bright flowers. But I don't have any flower beds, just pots. Looking good with both of you though. :up

@Grandad - I think you're too late for this year but next spring popping a few seeds amid those white rocks around the base of that palm you just transplanted would definitely give it a unique look and a little bit of colour too. (just a thought)

@H - Your nasturtiums are looking real good to me. You've definitely got lots more 'flower' showing than I do but I'm aware mine are growing in pretty nitrogen augmented garden soil aka manure which is going to promote the leaves vs the flowers.
