Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
@bigken
I think I have sussed it BK. The 12mp camera is RGB for all colour images.
Because mono is popular for its dramatic imagery and as the camera has a wealth of editing features plus RAW, the second camera which is 20mp is for mono only.
I know you have really decent smartphones but for a mid range model this has plenty of bells and whistles.
I am still finding my way around all the features but one that I think is really useful is for if you come across a situation or scene that you want to capture quickly. With a blank screen you simply point and double click the volume down button. No opening your screen and switching on your camera. I think that is really neat

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
The technology on these phones are amazing, I have the samsung s9+, things like face and finger recognition ( even eye retina ), I can even check my heart rate with it. I keep looking at the huawei p20/ pro, having Leica camera [emoji54].
We have a Leica shop in Manchester, I think if I was to go back in I might get arrest for stalking, would love one of there cameras

I have fingerprint and face recognition BK. But Leicas
All my life I have had an interest in photography and for that long I have yearned to own something like a vintage 1930's rangefinder but could never afford one. Dream on
PS. Forget about that heart monitor

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
I love the idea that a smart phone has finger & voice recognition. Wish my credit/debit cards had the same thing so as offer a higher level of protection if stolen.
That is also a super good feature of being able to just point your camera at a scene and take a photo. That is super duper. I think my cell phone takes a photo but if I have to turn it on (and usually I leave it off cause the battery runs out fast and I always get the beep beep beep it needs charging at 2am in morning) I lose a minute then I have to scroll through and find the camera button all before I take a photo so nothing instantaneous going to happen.
You phone camera is doing really well too if you're getting 12 & 20mp! That is terrific.
I've got to start thinking about getting one of these 'cept our phone plans here run several hundred +++ $$/month depending on your plan.

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
@bigken
I want to get to grips with all the camera functions on the P20, BK, and have printed the camera section from the manual, all 28 pages. That way I can study it in the comfort of an armchair instead of at the computer.
My general eye condition is not good and I shall probably dispose of my two remaining cameras and just use the mobile. Added to that I had to give up driving about 2 years ago and I also have mobility problems so can't get out and about as I used to specifically to take pictures.
I am still not sure about the function of the 2 cameras but this morning I took two pictures of the same scene. One in colour and one in mono. The mono file was 50% larger than the colour image so perhaps my theory is correct.
Now back to study the manual

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
My daughter has a Samsung S8 and I was so impressed with how it handles poor light conditions, when we were in Austria for Christmas, that I decided to upgrade. My preference is to download to the computer then put selected pictures on a stick to view on the big TV screen.

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
I was thinking how much I missed taking pictures using film the other day when I found a box of 6 undeveloped films belonging to my daughter. Wonder if they will develop OK?
Smile! It confuses people

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
MD, I would send a couple of the cassettes to one of the online photo labs. I have not used them for a very long time but they were not too expensive and it would prove if they are still OK before sending the rest. I bet they will process OK.

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
I have never in my life been interested in photography. I leave that to DH who is an avid camera fan and always has been. The only phone I would upgrade to would be an iPhone and that only so that I can speak to people face to face - for free!

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
I have not yet had an opportunity to try my new phone for picture taking other than a few snaps indoors. Tomorrow could be a brighter day so I may venture into the city on my scooter and find a few subjects. I will let you know how I get on.......with examples of course.

Re: A NEW BOYS TOY
Yes I'll still be able to show you pics, its Roy's old phone but new to me , I also got his tablet
which is far bigger than my kindle..........and believe it or not the photo size using the phone is
much bigger than my camera.
I haven't uploaded any photos yet from the phone but I'm sure Roy has all the cables for it
I'm looking forward to getting away BUT a 10 1/2 hour flight Heathrow - Las Vegas....yikes !!!!
